I actually like the way Arteta set us up here, basically playing one on one at the back and with only one holding midfielder. It’s not his fault that experienced defenders made schoolboy errors. Southampton didn’t “fully deserve” this win as the BBC kept shouting, on another day we win 3-1. Shit happens.

Gurgen these guys beat us with two shots. Which is crazy. But if we’d just set up properly early on, we’d have won this first half. Mosquera and White together was a problem. Saliba and Timber should be a lot better.

That's where I am now too. Realistically the chance of this team winning a 2 leg playoff against Barcelona or Athletico and then a final against any of the other 4 teams are less than remote. The 7 league games are more important.

The most worrying thing is not that we look like we don't know how to get over the line, but that after coming close so many times we look like we don't believe we can.

invisibleman18 I kind of agree I don't think we can win the champions league because we host don't have enough attackers for when it counts and I think if we did get past sporting and face a Barca we'd be trashed. We need to get the league done somehow because city are going to beat us at the Etihad and it's going to become a mental battle for us.

We're a top team but it's mind blowing that we are favourites to win the CL. Easy money to bet against us winning it.

We are lacking individual qualiy up front to win it.

I am not sure the club was emotionally as invested in the League Cup before the Wembley final or the FA Cup. These defeats won't shatter morale. CL though is different. I can imagine us being extremely invested in the CL mentally and emotionally. Losing in the CL will be damaging. We have been the best team in the competition and have been favorites. The last time we were firm favorites in the CL was 2004. That loss to Chelsea would have derailed our League quest if not for one of the best individual performances ever from Henry against Liverpool. We have to beat Sporting to keep the team believing. If anything, it will be great to just wrap it up in Lisbon.

I thought the short corner routines worked well. Created good shooting opportunities - well better ones than we find from open play

Also makes us less predictable on corners.

We missed Rice big time yesterday.

Odegaard is neat on the ball but he takes far too long to find a pass. It allows the opposition to fully set themselves. Needs to take more risks but the trouble is his through balls aren’t high quality - doesn’t ever put backspin on them

By the way, I find this "it says a lot that a 16-year-old was their best player" rhetoric very strange. This 16-year-old is a generational talent and he's one of the best pretty much every time he steps on the pitch. He would start for most teams in the world and it wouldn't be a surprise if by this time next year he will have displaced Saka to the left wing. No-one complained when Yamal was carrying Barcelona and Spain on his back. The only reason he doesn't play every week is because Arsenal actually wants him to finish school instead of banging OF models with Neymar.

Qwiss I think individual moments aren't the problem for players like martinelli. They've been hear long enough and they don't consistently deliver effectively as forwards and enough time has elapsed for me to know it's not going to change. The whole set of forwards are really not doing it and we need to try and swap out 2 or really 3 for actual quality. Jesus, Madueke, martinelli and havertz for sure aren't at the right level for me. Saka has been disappointing and I worry about him but you would give time to respond next season. We probably need a better player then Ode as well for me.

I think both things can be true. The chance at the end was tough and Martinelli actually did really well to get a shot off but we also know by now that he's unlikely to score thos low xG chances.

Ultimately, I thought he was fine yesterday and certainly didn't deserve to get his thread bumped but I also think we know his level now, which isn't good enough for a club of our ambitions.

You can have one player who's a walking injury risk because you don't want to give up on the natural talent, but we've had three in Öde, Havertz and Jesus this season (and that's being kind and not including Saka in that group). That's not sustainable in the long run and it hurts the team because Arteta counts on them. We need to pick one of them to keep in the summer and get the other two off the wage bill.

100% agree with this. And I'd keep Ode of the 3. Same goes for some other areas too. Can't keep Timber, White and Cala, at least one needs to go there.

I’d quite like to see Rice or Zubi behind Eze and Max in the midfield.

I’d also like to see Calafiori get a run as centreback. The guy is class.

I think a world class left sided attacker and we are a different proposition

lorddulaarsenal -- some of our best attacking sequences came from Calafior at LB. He just offers so much more than at CB, where he's relegated to such a small part of the field.

Some really sloppy mistakes from our defenders, school boy stuff which is very unlike us. Then we had absolute passengers out there in attack.

Really disappointing performance but put this behind us and move on.
