awooga83 they are annoying but nothing comes easy. In the invincibles season we drew a lot of games against shit teams. In 2001/2002 we fucking lost to Charlton Athletic and Newcastle at home.

In 1988/1989 (whilst I wasn’t a supporter at this time) I believe we drew to Wimbledon and Derby in 2 out of last 3 games of the season.

In 1997/1998 we lost v Blackburn at home.

I think the main issue here is that many folks on this forum just haven’t adapted to the tactical changes that have swept through the league. They expect to see swashbuckling performances every week but this league doesn’t allow that. We scored 4 open play goals last week against a naive team. And 2 set plays against a physical, hardworking team. We are adjusting to what’s put in front of us. And top of the table.

The clear proof of that is Wolves, despite being the worst ever team in terms of points in the PL era. They lost by more than 2 goals in the league like only 4 times this season. Most games have been tight affairs, which is in complete contrast to most teams at the foot of the table who keep getting thrashed most weekends.

Claudius this has nothing to do with how that match played out. Nobody in here is critical of the lack of a swashbuckling style of that we didn’t score four goals. The criticism is largely centred around the fact that yet again Chelsea went down to 10 men and were almost more than a match for us. Ten minutes to go, if you tuned in and didn’t know either team, you’d be forgiven for think the red team were a man down and the blue team league leaders.

We should have been all over Chelsea, suffocating the life out of them and controlling the game. We weren’t. We can’t. And sooner or later it will cost us points. The only issue is will that be more or less than City also lose.

Claudius the illusion that the league has been more 'physical and set piece focused' is because the recent main proponents of attacking football (city and pool) are in transition after dominating the league for 8 years with attack minded football. you stick a prime salah/mane era Liverpool or KDB era city into this season, and genuinely believe they'd be bullied and struggling? the league hasnt suddenly become any more 'physical and set-piece focused' than it has in the last 2-3 years. even the current mediocre city team look capable of winning the title, and their game is definitely not 'physical and set piece focused'. this talking point is going to look like extreme cope when city win this league playing watered down attacking football with one of the less physically dominant sides in the league.

I dont know how anyone could come away from that game - especially with the trendine of our 2026 form - and say 'sweet as, job done, on to the next one'. we're collapsing and don't have another gear. we look capable of dropping points in all our remaining fixtures regardless of their difficulty on paper

Sicario2 league campaigns from 20 years ago don't really matter anymore. Title winning teams need 90+ points on average these days. You can win with lower but you're then reliant on your rivals going through a transition season or shitting the bed

I know xG isn't everything but...

That reflects what I saw. We were okay in the first half but we let a team we were dominating back in. Then in the 2nd half we struggled to claw back the initiative against the same, very ordinary Chelsea.

Tactics Chelsea at home is the final ‘big’ game we play at home this season in the league in terms of opposition.

A team that hasn’t won a title in 22 years, in a stadium that is historically nervy for said reason, is not going to suddenly take a top 6 team apart even despite them going to ten men.

Mirth the 90+ point seasons era is over. Back in that era the league wasn't as strong or as tactical. There is a reason everyone is struggling to break 90 points now but the English teams are all top 10 in the CL table.

Qwiss up until the last 15 minutes, completely agree. We deserved a few more. Those last 15 minutes against 10 men really left me frustrated.

3 points are 3 points but we can't keep getting away with the head loss we suffer in these tight games

Whatever the cause is, it's uniform across the league.

Gazza M the league is literally more physical. There are a a lot of good attacking mids. None of them are lighting up the league. Do you think it’s a coincidence that we score so many set piece goals, and Liverpool, spurs and United have followed suit. That Brentford has specialists who hurl the ball. Teams are tough to break down now. And a lot of what you see is a reaction to Klopp/Guardiola. Other managers have learned siege defense, and the protagonists have had to focus on set piece / throw in set plays. Once defences / rules catch up, the game will evolve again. Combine this with an ever more packed schedule, and nobody is going to dominate the premier league with 90 or 100 points for a few seasons.

RowJimmy their attacking transitions and passing are both better than us, and they have better forwards (haaland and semenyo are 1st and 3rd in the top scorers chart). they give up more space than us, but even thats not as clear cut as it was in the first half of the season. we've been giving up almost as much space as they do in the last 2 months.
