Lot of noise about spurs but ultimately they’ve spent a zillion quid and none of their players make it in to our first eleven. None.

Big Willie Champ no, he came from Bolton's academy and there was a point where it looked like he was going to go to City at the last minute. And I distinctly remember a few people on AM fuming about it (can't remember who).

My point is, no point getting too exorcised about missing out on youth players. @daredevil mentioned Wellington Silva and that's a great example - we'd all watched his videos and thought he'd be amazing. None of that came to fruition though.

I don't particularly care who we sign, and I especially don't give a crap about missing out on youth talent, but when everything is said and done we need three things this summer: 1) A midfielder, 2) a winger, and 3) a rightback.

I sympathise with not paying insane fees for players who aren't world class, but at the end of the day it's the market and not your feelings that dictates what a player is worth. Missing out is worse than overpaying by far.

Get three players in who are on the level of a title-winning team and no one will have any legitimate complaints whatsoever. I think Barcola and Bruno/Scott look like good candidates but I'm sure there are others.

It’s a shame we lost on Monga but you have the next summer to strengthen the reserves and young talent. And the summer after that and so on.

It’s now or never for the first team though - we need to hit August with LW/CM/RB filled otherwise defending the title will be tough.

Get better scouts and sign lesser known players who are also good. Smaller clubs do this all the time. You can't convince me there is no-one out there who has Rogers' level of talent and ability but does not cost 130m.

Lesser known players are almost always not quite as good or not quite as established due to being younger or in a lesser league. Smaller clubs can afford to spend time developing them. Bigger clubs need to sign ready to go players to maintain their dominance - otherwise you risk a transition.

Smaller clubs have to do this. And btw, there are a dozens of smaller clubs care can cherry pick the bets they got right and ignore their failures. It doesn’t make sense for us to replicate the systems small clubs have. We need to focus on acquiring and taking care of elite players

Cannon I've been following him too but he seems to have gone a bit mad this summer. He's doing too much. He's added a load of channels and seems to feel like he's under pressure to deliver news almost every day

daredevil exactly. Brighton or Brentford sign 4 or 5 players and if one makes it big people say "why can't we do that". Every game for us last season had so much pressure, you can't just drop some kid from the Erdivise in and hope he can keep up. You can't give him 10 games to figure out.

Sicario2 you were saying this last summer too and we did our business well and won the league. There is no point panicking. The world cups on, its always slow on the transfer front as a result.

Anyway I don't mind us signing players like Monga, Scott, etc but I wouldn't be losing sleep over any of them. The club are right to have valuations and stick to them. So far I haven't seen any big problem with how we've acted so far this summer.

I reckon the biggest problem is that we spent two summers worth of money in one summer. It's been conspicuously quiet on the outgoings front, though.

Meatwad i've come to the conclusion that 20+ years without a league title has damaged some us permanently where we have to be in a constant state of anger about the way this club moves.

One thing that annoys me is that if we don't sign three available midfielders for example—let's say Fernandes, Tonali and Guimarães—these morons act as if we've failed three times instead of possibly having missed just one opportunity. Every player who doesn't play for Arsenal is experienced as a loss to be mourned.

City beat us to Nypan last summer, these guys are literally years away from getting into the first team. End of the day the club has to stick to its valuations.

HOA is getting a bit too carried away with the attention, still think he is a club plant though...

i've come to the conclusion that 20+ years without a league title has damaged some us permanently where we have to be in a constant state of anger about the way this club moves. i wanted us to sign him, not because i believed in his great talent, but because we should sign young players in hopes of one of them hitting. but when you take that approach you must have a strict budget because saying 3-4m is nothing is crazy when it's for players that won't play a part in the first team. while it's good to plan for the future, the present matters more. if you can't have a fuck off number when buying youth players, who can you have it with?

we need those positions, but i don't think we need to be desperate about when it gets done. that mattered when we were nearly men and the pressure to win was insanely high. i'm fully confident that if we start slow, we'll be able to run anyone down.

And we also know more about where Nwaneri, Dowman and Myles are at that point. These are the guys we should develop right now because they're already here and their talent is well-known. So few youth talents end up making it at top level in the end, and that's fine, but it also means it's futile business for a top team. When you're champions you can waste money but you can't waste time and points.

Like Qwiss said, our strategy is not to develop players with the expectation that one in five is going to turn out good and bring home the bacon. We should be buying players with the expectation that 2 out of 3 will help us immediately to another league title.

JazzG people also need to realise we can't go out and sign Monga and offer him bigger wages than Max. That sends a signal to players and its not a good one. Monga might go on to be the next Rooney or he might go on and be the next Jay Emanuel Thomas, probably somewhere in between but so what? You can't just go breaking your wage structure willy nilly. When it matters we cough up whats needed. I reckon we'll make some seriously big signing before August and people will be very happy.

Anyway I always felt it'd be hard for us to bring through Max and Monga at the same time.
