We have a lot of physicality already though. We were ahead of the game in seeing where the EPL is going but it would be complacent to think that will hold true for long. We saw how many problems Cherki caused us in the Carabao Cup and the match at the Etihad. Personally I think if we continue to recruit for physicality, we risk becoming unbalanced. Other than Wharton, I don't think any of Fernandes, Bouaddi or Garner are weak physically but they also have the technical ability we need.

For the record, if Tonali was priced the same as these other options, I would be completely on board. I just think there are similar options available that are both younger (bar Garner) and cheaper.

That's more than a fair view @samthegooner and in Fernandes you have a player who should be fresh and well accustomed to the league. Bouaddi feels like a player that Arteta won't trust for quite some time, and to some extent I think we already have a comparable player/role for MLS. Garner has looked good but that's easier for Everton than West Ham so I prefer Fernandes.

Yildiz would improve the left side of our attack by several degrees. Can also play central , but I dont see Arteta going for him with Eze already in the squad. Maybe if we move Trossard and Jesus or even Martinelli ... but I dont think Yildiz is in our plans. A real pity , he had all the traits to be a great PL player

I personally feel that Yildiz is a Havertz and Jesus replacement if he comes. He's the in-betweeny one who can act as both a second striker and a 9. Eze can be a second striker or a midfielder but not the top man. That's where I see Yildiz's development heading on the other hand. Both Capello and Vicenzo Montella have talked about how they think he's similar to Del Piero (and they should know from coaching and playing with him for so many years), and I think Yildiz has said Del Piero is his big idol too.

Doesn't guarantee that he'll turn out that way of course, but I think that's where he has a chance to be elite given his talents.

The issue, if one views it as such, is that we currently have Nwaneri and Dowman who could both reasonably be expected to develop into top-tier second strikers within the next 2-3 seasons. Then again, both of them have an aptitude for the wings that I don't really see in Yildiz.

Maybe the long-term solution to our left wing is Saka when everything is said and done, with Dowman or Ethan on the right. Yildiz would make a lot of sense to have around in that scenario. He'd also make sense if we've lost a bit of faith in Nwaneri, but I hope that isn't the case. I think we're after him because Jesus and Havertz have started like 6 league games each in the last 18 months. It seems prudent to bring in someone with that profile if we reckon a couple of forwards will be leaving soon.

Can’t visualise it Rodger’s. I think he’d struggle as a left winger against deep blocks and we’re absolutely stacked in the 8s.

I think Villa in general are a dangerous team to buy from. Massive over performance on their xPts and everything good they do is on the transition. Classic MotD team, and the risk there is so is Rodger’s.

Just buy a really technical left winger, a Saka for the left side or at least a really good Trossard upgrade. Do that and start to incorporate more of Ethan, Eze, Dowman and Ode in the 8 positions and our football will start to join up in the final third.

i hope not because the world cup is a pretty shitty tournament to base an expensive decision on. all the countries that are expected to reach the latter stages have known commodities.

should have got tonali last summer instead of zubimendi, if we wanted him. theres too much overlap between them imo. id prefer someone with a different profile to tonali

We need to prioritise attack above anything else. All this talk about which CM to get yet MLS looked completely at ease in the semi-final and final of the Champions League. Dispelled the myth he couldn't play in midfield against the top teams.

Both wings and AM need strengthening. Need the kind of signings that would make Saka and Odegaard worry for their spots.

this is the first time during the entire project ive felt we need to find players that could lead to potentially phasing odegaard out, and benching saka. they look like shells of what they were 2 years ago. my odegaard denial has been strong because I've seen what wonderful player he can be, but 2 seasons of indifferent form is too much. I think artera sees it the same. he's benched and subbed him much more than I ever thought he would

yildiz, rogers, kroupi, tonali - sounds like we want all of them

Tactics

We should make a move for Vinicius. Yes, he's a c@nt and very unlikable, but his talent is exactly what we need to elevate the team to the next level. Surprisingly, I think we have a real chance of getting him if we push hard. It’s becoming clear at Madrid that having both him and Mbappé in the same squad isn’t sustainable.

Start by testing the waters with Kvara, and if that doesn’t work out, pivot to Vini

Not keen on another central midfielder. Put some trust in MLS, Zubimendi and Merino for another season.

Take a hammer to the attacking midfield position and forward line instead. We've played six games where the opponents were Liverpool, Man City or PSG and not won a single game. The attack was the weak link each time.

Tactics

Dom I'd welcome a ball playing CM (a true technician) to compete with MLS, Zubi can rotate with Rice

We're close, but will need to reinvent things next year. After a World Cup summer we're not going to physically dominate our way to PL/CL. The technical side needs to be improved – first touch, combinations, coolness under pressure, end product.

I wouldn't mind seeing any of the forwards we bought last summer – Gyökeres, Madueke, Eze – go. Saka, Ødegaard, and Havertz have fitness questions and haven't reached the heights since 2024. Martinelli and Trossard can be upgraded. Merino is an interesting wildcard and useful squad player but nothing more. Dowman (and Nwaneri maybe) will impact the team next season but as supporting cast. Who in our 'front four' is safe? Besides Saka. All very good players, but a couple probably need to go.
