Fundamentally, I think market dictates that we need to take more punts on young players. Loan them out and then either sell them on or give them a role in the team. We're being really passive on that front - the academy recruitment has been at times bizarre and Martinelli is the only young forward I can think of in the last 5 years that we recruited at pro level.

we signed the ecuadorian twins and just signed a georgian. all 3 will be eligible to move to arsenal next summer when they're 18.

Yeah, there's been a bit of a shift in the last 12 months. But prior to that, we were signing kids released for Norwegian 2nd Division teams.

We aimed for high calibre players. If you look at players seem to be actively targetting Rogers, Vini Jr and Alvarez all would have improved us. We clearly did not think Rogers was worth £117m, which I think is the right decision. Vini Jr and Alvarez we tried hard but couldn't get over the line.

The only other was Barcola, I'm not entirely convinced he was that high on our list and if he was we weren't gonna go to the level Liverpool did to buy him. We were linked to him but nowhere near as strongly as Liverpool were.

The big miss was last January not signing Semenyo, he would have come in around £60m so a reasonable fee and while he isn't a superstar player he would have definitely improved our LW. We probably had other targets we thought we could get in the summer so didn't move on him. Hindsight is a wonderful thing though...

I think the problem is there are a few well placed sources saying we could have had him within out valuation if we moved a bit faster. If we'd signed Tzolis and Rogers our left hand side would look great right now and there would be no doubt about it being an upgrade.

Don Pacifico yeah his press conference answers on the summer window I found a bit all over the place.

For example

I love my players, that's what I can say. In the bracket, how you want to put them, I don't know. I think at the end of the season we'll put everybody in their place and let's trust them. Let's make sure that we are right behind them and we do everything we can to help the incredible talent that they have.

awooga83 that actually reads a bit more clearly to me. Sounds like a veiled criticism of our recruitment.

I find Arteta’s answers at press conferences to often feel disingenuous. Little too much new age PR around him.

MistaT yeah but its probably for the best. Last thing we need is him having a public spat over not getting players. The way the press is you have to say as little as possible to stop it becoming a big story.

Qwiss That is a legitimate complaint, we have seen the transfer market go crazy in recent years so yes if was one of our first choice targets we should have just gone early and got it done. I don't know if the Vini Jr thing complicated matters, maybe we had been led to believe that one could have legs so decided to delay it, I am just speculating.

We were talking here a few days ago about Gordon and how Newcastle could have got more if they had held on until after the world cup.

By the way, been watching Real Madrid games and Vini Jr is exactly the same frustrating player pre-chin surgery. Glad we weren't able to land him

I watched highlights of that game after reading the post above and Vinicius created all their chances...

Though they've also got Bellingham and Mbappe, that Real Madrid XI is phenomenally average. Two dopes at CB and a lightweight, low energy midfield that should easily get gobbled up by Rice and Bruno.
