We don’t have the best attackers because they all play for our rivals.
You don’t have to be a professional scout to pull up a list of all the active attackers across Europe and sort it by most productive. Almost all will be playing for our rivals. You will get some outside of that which is how we ended up with Gyokeres and
Tzolis.
The remainder will be players who we would have to gamble on and I think that’s ultimately what we will have to do. I argued for years that we would struggle to land a CF upgrade and I’m of a similar opinion here.
Ultimately, we gambled on Gyokeres who didn’t turn out to be the upgrade we needed but he delivered a title, so I think we need to do the same. Which we’ve done with Tzolis but I suspect he will go the same way as Gyokeres.
Regardless, outside of a hand me down, our best bet is to keep circulating around the 22-24 market to find the next big thing, but the problem this summer was that potential was valued at actuals, with Diomande, Rogers and Barcola moving for fees that were quoted for Vini and Alvarez.
Regardless, we do need to take more gambles but with that we need a more efficient exit strategy. Offering players lower wages, undertaking a quicker one year assessment and willing to trade more frequently is the only hope we have of finding the next big attacker for a decent fee.
What we can’t do is hold on to a player that we know isn’t going to kick on - as we probably should have done with Madueke. If we’re more effective at trading our second choice attackers and playing the market - we would increase the odds of landing someone with the talent needed.
