Meatwad Thing with Semenyo is if we really wanted him we could have structured that deal to go into the next years finance and made it work. Sounds like his people approached us and we didn't give them confidence that we would be actively targetting him in the summer. I think we had other priorities but that has come to bite us on the arse, would have been perfect for us.

With Gordon I do wonder if Newcastle happy to sell cheaper if abroad or he had some kind of clause in his contract, makes no sense that he goes for £63m and Tonali for £100m!

JazzG €80 million was not considered cheap for Gordon at the time he moved, mind. I don't think it's a cheap fee for someone who isn't even an England regular. But he also moved just before City, Chelsea and Real wrecked the market for everyone else. He's a much better player than Rogers imo and if Newcastle thought they could get that kind of money for him they would have sold him domestically.

Gazza M I don't like selling Martinelli and Trossard either, but we have an issue with squad places and there are UEFA rules at play too. It's possible to agree with the general policy of the club and still disagree on specifics.

Klaus it wouldve been possible to keep at least one them, and paid jesus to fuck off. co-pay half his salary, take a hit on his fee, anything. its not like we haven't taken those kinds of measures with useless highly paid assets in the past.

Klaus Market has gone mental. Chelsea, Spurs and Man City all for different reasons are creating a massive distortion.

Gordon was very good in the CL but has come off two average league seasons but you could see he was a good player. That deal was done quite early and before the world cup, announced in May so clearly being worked on behind the scenes early. Around that time Rogers was being talked about in the _£80m price range, I think the Elliot Anderson and Tonali fees just sent the market haywire.

Selling Martinelli isn't the problem, lets be honest probably wouldn't have improved much and then next summer we are trying to sell him with a year on his contract.

Losing two wide players and only signing one is more of a problem though.

Despite all that we have players who can cover multiple positions. Eze + Madueke can cover LW. As long as we don't have another injury crisis we should manage but not ideal.

JazzG Yep, and I think Barca mostly went by the fact that they got undone in the CL by his pace.

Ironic that Newcastle sold him so early for what most people felt was an exorbitant money, and now it looks like they potentially missed out on 30-40 million.

I feel like people say stuff like "market has gone mad" based on historic numbers, but those don't mean anything since these transfers are all based on current revenue. All Premier League clubs aren't suddenly making deals that will lose them money, but players are worth more because there's more money in the game.

QuincyAbeyie I'm saying it has gone mad because nothing has changed in the last 12 months to justify Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers being among the top 6 transfer fees of all time. Both are very good players but yeah I'm quite comfortable with my words.

Klaus Actually think we would have gone for him, we've been linked to him for a while. Arteta has a preference for PL based players.

This. But I would nuance it. I think what is happening over and above this is related to Champions league. There is tons of money and prestige in the Champions League. But as the middle class clubs in Wngland get better, it’s getting harder and harder to book a place, even with UEFA effectively gifting the league 5 places. So due to the risk of not qualifying, clubs are going berserk.

Also remember that all these clubs finished below us, have more gaps and more desperation. Let the savages tear each other apart. There is no trophy for winning silly season.

It sounds like we have been on the case for Vini Jr for a while and we were suppose to be following Yildiz and Barcola. Possibly why the club thought they could afford to let him go as there would be other options this summer.

RowJimmy I think we have no insight into what we were willing to pay. Even coming towards the end of all the saga the athletic were reporting we and Madrid had different valuations. It's easy to say this it that would have happend but we don't know all we know is the actions we have taken as a club not to meet inflated valuations. I don't believe we know about what deal we may have put forwards either the agent stuff I don't really believe.

The not knowing I meant Vino was never coming similar to an Mbappe it was just always a less the 5% outcome for me so not like most transfers you see through. That type of player shouldn't be your primary target because it's highly unlikely, you need to find others.

I still don’t think Alvarez is done and dusted.

But regardless I want N’Diaye. I had already started coming around on him a week ago and watching more of him just confirms he’s got the 1v1 directness with technique that we lack outside of Saka (also Eze when he wants to and dowman when he’s playing). A Tzolis and N’Diaye combo with some Eze sprinkled in would be a very nice group. I’d also entertain Schade although I think he’d disappoint us technically (while replacing Martinellis work rate and explosiveness).

samthegooner I suspect N’Diaye will be extremely underwhelming in terms of output. Perhaps a good complementary piece to the likes of VG14, Eze and Tzolis who are highly output focused. Wonder why we were not in for Mbaye at what felt like an extremely reasonable price (even if the kid is only 18) - thought he was an outstanding youngster. Probably too complex in terms of agent fees and so on, especially with his mother representing him (has that ever turned out well) which is why it was only Villa eventually.
