Ray I don't think he'll go for that much, not after the season he's had and the way he's pushed for this Barca move. I think a deal could be done around £100m-£110m, they paid £80m for him.

A swap deal with Gyokeres would be ideal, dunno maybe £60m + Gyokeres? I think he'd do well for them.

awooga83 Don't think over £100m is cheap, they're asking for approx £128m. They won't deal with Barca and apart from us nobody else is serious. If things are as toxic as they look, the player was publicly humiliated over the weekend I don't see them wanting to keep him around.

I think Arsenal will also drag this out right until the end of the window, more likely to drop their price and the player might push for the move.

JazzG I don't think he'll push for an arsenal move myself. I also don't think they want to sell. It's awkward but plenty of players have changed their tune overtime as well in similar scenarios.

awooga83 We'll see what happens, Berta has strong links with Atletico and it is being reported people from Atletico were here in London and Alvarez was likely discussed. If things have soured with Atletico we are the only club that offers him a way out and for Atletico, who are 100% against selling to Barca, the only club seriously interested and have the financial means to get close to their asking price.

He'll know he will join a team fighting for the PL and CL, I am convinced that will appeal to him. However clearly he dreams of playing for Barca, Messi is probably one of his idols and Barca legend so not entirely surprising he wants to play for them.

Not bothered about the fee seeing as Mokbel says:

The Gunners are confident they can finance any deal and quickly finalise the transfer - if he said yes.

It's just another case of player deciding he wants to come and us making it happen. Closer it gets to deadline the more likely it is he will come I think.

If he were to come he could be a starter at LW or as a striker I reckon, and yes it's most likely we would experiment with LW. That would leave us Tzolis and Eze among our options to come on on the left, or Havertz and Gyök (if he sticks around) if he were to start up front.

I have my doubts we can really get him, and I don't think he would revolutionise us, but I think he'd improve us significantly, so I'm pleased we appear to be trying to get him even if the attempt appears to be hastening Gabi's exit. Which other position are we meant to improve?

we have the same questions regarding our midfield. Two of Bruno, Rice, Odegaard, MLS or Zooby have to sit on the bench. It's what we need.

But still... 100 mil?

Burnwinter yeap, we are in an unbelievable position where there are only two positions in the XI we could realistically improve on and the even then, any improvement would be marginal (failing a Vini, Mbappe, Kvara, Kane level upgrade). It's both a good and bad position to be in.

My hope is we see a world class star develop internally this season via either Dowman through his minutes with us or Nwaneri whilst out on loan.

I really think if Alvarez comes in, Gyokeres will go out. There are more than a few reports of Barcelona interest, which really surprises me. Apparently they view him as a backup plan to Alvarez and the other option, Lautaro Martinez, has already been ruled out. If that were to happen, I think we would also look to add another attacker. That part I'm less convinced on but I do think if we bring in Alvarez then Gyokeres will leave.

The thought of Gyokeres playing for Barca does makes me laugh but if they want him they can have him. He is much more suited for a team like Atletico where they play much more on the counter and will get the ball to him quickly rather than a possession team like Barca where you need a very high technical ability to succeed.

JazzG did you watch Barca against Elche this weekend? Gyokores would have a field day with that much space. He's not gonna start for them but coming off the bench with 30 mins to go and running into space, he could be quite effective despite his massive technical flaws.

Spain would be perfect for him considering how open most teams are.

TambourineMan Agree, and I think his physicality would make a bigger impact in La Liga. I think he'd be decent for them. He's just not big and fast enough to be a bully striker in the Prem – and when his strengths are negated, his technical limitations become more significant.

TambourineMan I think the home games especially when they have Rodri and 60%+ possession will be harder for him. But I do agree he'd do a lot better in Spain, here he has no physical superiority over CBs whereas he would in Spain.

He needs space and time to get his shots away, he struggles in that respect here.

I also could easily see Arteta viewing Alvarez as a LW option that comes inside like Tzolis was doing against Cardiff. That is perfect for a right footed elite shooter, which he is. I love where this team is going and think it's going to result in us not having as much trouble with low blocks this season (injuries permitting). I always was in awe of how many quality ball strikers those top City and Liverpool teams had that could (and would) change a game with one strike from an imperfect angle or outside of the box. We have done a good job of adding better ball striking gradually with Rice, Calafiori, Gyokeres, Eze and now Tzolis, to add to Saka and Nwaneri. Adding in Alvarez gives another weapon to slalom across the box looking for a quick shot. He's also got good movement and would be a great target for those MLS reverse passes or Guimaraes through balls.

Cannon hmmmmm, would rather someone like Schade or Gakpo if we're going down that route (i.e. competition for Tzolis vs bona fide starter). But ultimate preference would be no signing if that's what we're doing.
