JazzG the more I think about this, the more I think we should avoid Barcola. He'll cost a club record fee and command wages at the top end of our structure. A signing like that cannot fail and I'm not convinced that Barcola will be a guaranteed success.

Now that it looks like Martinelli will go, I'd rather replace him with him with direct competition for Tzolis. Someone on manageable wages who'd be competing for and not commanding a starting berth on the left. I like Baturina for this, maybe Rayan also or even (currently injured) Kroupi.

I think that's the play. Then in 12 months we reassess. Maybe Tzolis/Baturina/Rayan/Kroupi/Downan explode and the problem goes away or they don't, and we see who the breakout star of 26/27 is and focus our energy there.

But I think it's time to part with Martinelli, love the guy but this relationship has run it's course and I'd now be open to replacing him with someone who isn't already at a WC level but might get there one day. And on a personal level, I'd also love to see Martinelli tear it up in a more open league. I think he could have a McTominay like renaissance at Napoli or somewhere in the Bundesliga or La Liga.

Ray yeah I wouldn't mind that either but its pretty clear Arteta doesn't want left footers on the left wing.

daredevil ok - I’ll amend slightly. Eze played centrally in the next game vs Wolves, got hooked off before 60 mins and then didn’t feature at all for the next 4 league games and didn’t start another league game till mid Feb. Arteta was not happy.

I would really like Kroupi at some point in the next 6-24 months.

I have confidence that we are working on one more big attacking signing but I also realistically am a bit worried that we will not get one in before the end of the window. I think that's fine if we are keeping Martinelli but if we sell him AND don't bring in another attacker then that is just shooting ourselves in the foot. We could definitely play Eze there and personally I still think that will be his best role in this team if Arteta can give him more minutes to get comfortable there. But I like having one runner profile and one technical/creative profile on the wing and if we get rid of Martinelli, we will just have creative profiles on the left side and only one runner on the right (Madueke).

If we can't bring in an elite forward this window, I'd love to get Mbaye at the quoted price of EUR 50M - will be nearly a straight swap for Martinelli in terms of price. I know he plays on the right at PSG, but as a right footer, should be able to play LW for us and will be a great option to take over from Eze in a few years. Looks a real talent. First preference is still Kroupi though.

Bernard Woolley I was thinking the same thing this morning when looking at highlights of Barcola and Mbaye. I think Mbaye might end up being the better player and he would be significantly cheaper. Also with Tzolis looking to be a real player, he might not be as concerned with not being the day in day out starter like Barcola would be. Mbaye also looks athletically and physically more suited for the EPL - Barcola can fly but I'm not sure he would deal well with the physicality of the league. I'd take Mbaye in a heartbeat and wish we were in for him.

QuincyAbeyie Hopefully nothing is done till it is done. Clearly we need a young and potentially elite LW (as evidenced by our public pursuit of Monga earlier this summer) and he fits the bill.

Have to say, I really don't want Alvarez after the way he's carried on this summer. I was interested before but what happens if we spend massive money on him and Barca come in for him again next summer?
