I don't understand why we are looking for a CB when we could potentially just move White and/or Timber there and bring in a new RB with a different profile (more of an attacking RB) to add some true diversity to our squad that will help even when Saliba is back. That would be the route I would be heading personally.

Made my peace with our LW, Tzolis looks like a decent gamble and remaining option look poor, so happy to keep Martinelli for another year and see wat he does if we fix the rest of te team.

But please drop the bag on a CF. I like Kai but at the best of times he is still inconsistent and I dont think I can handle watching another season of Gyokeres fumbling over himself.

samthegooner the way we all wanted a new RB last season, assumed White would move on and yet nothing has happened is quite annoying. Even Arteta was benching White for Mosquera at RB, that should have been all he needed to move him on. We are far too slow in cases like this.

We've done fuck all to move on our injury issues and its causing us to make stupid compromises in other positions now.

The obvious issue being that White and Timber are the problem.

Timber hasn't trained all of pre-season while White has broken down twice since returning from his lengthly lay off last year. Neither can be relied upon and that's not withstanding Saliba

Apparently Cancelo is available for less than 10m, might be worth looking at. Knows the league, very attacking FB - can invert as well as overlap

I trust Mikel to fix defensive issues even if we have less than ideal personnel, I am much more worried about our attack

daredevil We really should have replaced White properly this summer. Timber is the best in the world on his position when he's available which makes him worth persisting with. White on the other hand is a backup who cannot be relied on to be a backup. I suspect the knee injury made it hard to sell him but still, the club has to be ruthless in situations like these.

Another way to look at signing Konsa is that he'd become our most expensive defensive signing of all time. Now I know prices are inflated but I think that's bonkers unless we're planning on getting rid of any of our starting defenders (which we shouldn't be doing if Konsa is the replacement).

If we didn’t sign Madueke last season I don’t think we would have won the league btw (mainly because it enabled us NOT to rely on Saka 24/7) and at the time most was against spending £50m on him.

The ROI is worth it (for both).

The opportunity cost of NOT signing Konsa (assuming we don’t sign anyone else at the back) would be far more costly than paying £60m for decent to good cover.

Sicario2 Yeah I don't have a problem with Konsa as a placeholder if it means that we don't suffer too much without Saliba. I'd prefer moving for a RB since it would be better long term IMO but we are in our title window so much like spending 80m on a 29 year old midfielder, I'd be fine with spending on an older CB if it maintains our title chances. Still think we can get a better deal on Konsa so hopefully if he's the guy, we push that price down.

I would say our scouts have plenty of credit in the bank for defensive signings. It's not like Konsa is a bad player at all - he's been one of the reasons Villa are in the CL - and it goes back to the same point with Bruno G, we could sign someone younger and with potential, and overall we'd be happy if they turned out about as good as Konsa is to cover a slot in the squad.

That's where I land too. There's no room to drop any points if you want to win.

I think the fans might be underwhelmed because Konsa isn't as hyped up, but he's at least on pair with Guehi, and there aren't many who would have been down on signing Guehi at any point in the last 12 months.

I must say I'm finding it hard to care much about Mosquera right now too. If he's better than Konsa he can try to convince Mikel in training this season, and if not then he has no right to complain or feel aggrieved. Same as Nwaneri. This is the standard if you want to play for the champions.

Mirth sure, it's just when it comes to PL signings, it feels like it's more a Mikel pick rather than something the scouts 'unearthed'.

You're right that it's the same scenario as Guimaraes. I think the main differences for me are:

(i) I rate Guimaraes quite highly
(ii) I can see Guimaraes getting a lot of games when all our midfielders are fit
(iii) I think Guimaraes adds something to our midfield that I don't think we have currently

Comparatively, I don't see Konsa as a defensive equivalent.

To be clear, I don't think he's a bad player I just don't think he's worth the investment and am not convinced we can't find someone better suited to our needs at a lower price. Not that I'm suggesting we sign him but Diomande is going for between £30-40m - that to me seems a much more reasonable price range for a player that is providing emergency cover this season and is unlikely to feature much beyond it.

Klaus funnily enough I view the Konsa signing as a vote of confidence for Mosquera. The club aren’t signing another 24-25 year old. Konsa is 29 this October - if Mosquera has the talent and the determination - he should be able to claim that spot in over the course of the season.

Of course Saliba is the generational talent here with a contract till 2030 so in the end, as long as Saliba is fit, let’s hope both Mosquera and Konsa ride the bench.

I’d take Konsa too and add Alvarez and I think it’s been a successful summer.
