Mirth I think this is the key point, for all the chat he hasn't rejected it thrown Madrid out with them not offering what he wants which I think likely means he wants to stay and also that any brinkmanship could continue until close to the window closing. With a potential outcome in the scenarios that he backs down or accepts a compromise. Meanwhile are we just going to sit on the sidelines waiting for a low chance that it breaks for us for the whole summer?

daredevil I think it's more the latter, he wants to be the main man at the biggest club in the world. he wants the status, not the money (my opinion) and he won't get that here at Arsenal unfortunately. you only get that status at Real or Barca. we might hate to say it, but to move from Real to Arsenal is a downgrade. to move from Real to just about anyone is a downgrade.

Whether he wants more status or not - the fact is that he is unhappy with the contract offer as he wants more money. He could end up signing and I could see Real improving the terms at some point.

However, as it stands, Real made an offer 18 months ago, Vini has refused to sign it as he wants more of his image rights and more money net. That's why he hasn't signed.

That will become clear if he rejects the offer which is currently unchanged and has been on the table for 18 months.

daredevil yeah but if he's not rejected it over that whole time I think that's a pretty good sign he's open to staying however he can and he hasn't just walked away. If finance is the driver he won't have any particular affinity to play at arsenal so better to explore who will offer him the best if he's going to walk away from his preferred choice.

TambourineMan I think the part that is important here is the (many) reports that Arsenal have been in touch with his agency for a while now and have sounded out a move. To me, that says that he’s at least interested otherwise we would’ve moved on. Now I am not deluded enough to think we are his first choice or things wouldve likely already happened and let’s be honest, these players don’t leave Madrid EVER. However, I do think that the chances he doesn’t agree to terms with Madrid are decent and that he and his reps view us as a very good alternative if he can’t stay at his dream club. He clearly loves Madrid but he feels undervalued and overshadowed. Could those feelings change and allow him to concede so that he could resign? Definitely. But if they don’t, Madrid doesn’t want to let him leave for free. I also don’t think Vini wants to leave for free and tarnish his reputation with the Madrid fans. We also would represent a new challenge where he is the face of the team, and likely league, and where he’d reportedly make more money. I understand wanting to lower expectations but I don’t think this is as far fetched as you’ve stated. However it does hinge on your faith in the reporting we have seen through Ornstein and less reliable channels.

daredevil yeah but at the moment it's smoke and mirrors. Everybody won't give in until they do. If you were so committed to getting what you want you could easily end negotiations. The fact they continue is a sign there could be compromise either side so the comments nobody will move is bluster for now and what you probably say in negotiations.

I know Vini has won the Champions League a couple times already with Real.... but if really wants to feel that importance that he seems to crave, why not join Arsenal and help deliver their first ever Champions League trophy? We were dead-ass close last year, and just need that last little oomph up front to get us over the line. He could be that last little oomph. Then he will go down in history with the club as being a key figure to bring us our first ever Champions League.. How's THAT for important? (I know, its a long shot, but its also true).. All the banter stops, Arsenal are then at the top, at the pinnacle, and he would have helped bring us there.. (Real Madrid, as storied of a club as it is, is NOT at the top at the moment, in the prime of his career) And having him on the left frees up Saka on the right, and teams really won't be able to focus on him as much anymore. That brings a threat from both sides, which is what we desperately need.

I know, totally unlikely, but still..... We are obviously financially able to pull off the transfer. Gotta sell him on the rest of that story.

USArsenal agree. I think it's comparable to the sales pitch we gave Auba, a player who should have been playing for a better club. But we made him believe he could be a club legend (obviously, that didn't happen). It wasn't just about on-field success, it was about creating a legacy.

Now, we've gone up a couple of levels and the sales pitch is for one of the world's best players.

I agree its highly unlikely. Im prepared for the worst, of course. But who are our current alternatives in the event this crashes and burns? We can't really let this position in particular wait until the last minute of the window. (I mean, i guess we can since we still have GabMart and Tzolis)

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert my argument is that ending up with no one is better than overpaying to an extreme to bring in Barcola or a player like Alvarez who will just be biding his time to get to Barca. We will absolutely be kicking ourselves next summer if we spend 120m plus on Barcola only for him to slightly outperform Martinelli and then not having the financial power or desire from leadership to replace our big signing from this year. I’m getting to the point where I’d rather take a punt for 40/50m max on Rashford or Leao at the end of the window than spend big on Barcola or Alvarez but at that point, I’d rather just keep Martinelli and give him a chance with Bruno feeding him in behind.

I just don’t think there are intermediate options under Vini that are worth pivoting to so it makes sense to me to try as hard as we can for what would be a monumental improvement to our already great squad.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert I don’t think this would be successful by the way but as a late consolation signing with a much smaller financial package, I’d prefer it to panic pivoting to an expensive overvalued option. He’s been basically begging any big EPL team for a shot so to go in for him now would be foolish.

We’ve been begging Arsenal to act like a big boy and be in the room for these level deals but now everyone is willing to throw in the towel because it’s a long shot? Can’t have it both ways. Personally I’m pumped that we are pushing our chips in and taking a gamble that will take us up a serious level.

samthegooner this. We’ve already got numerical cover through Tzolis. Never seen him play but he’s exactly the profile that Bournemouth or Brighton sign and a season later everyone wishes they were onto him sooner.

We’ve got to keep our nerve. Just continue on with signing Bruno and a defender in the meanwhile.

I would take Rashford as a backup option before I'd take Leao.. And i dont particularly want Rashford.
