I'm not gonna complain if we get him but that isn't a very wise way to spend money. I think the initial figures were saw of around ~ £65m are a much more fair value for him but Newcastle have sold big so they won't let him go cheap.

As for Scott he's shown against us and many other teams he is good enough at the highest level, I see no reason why he couldn't slot right in straight away.

JazzG Who is better than Guimaraes other than Rice? Personally I think he walks into our starting XI and is a top 3-5 CM in the EPL right now. He’s also not reliant on athleticism so I see him aging well and having another 3-4 years at a top level. I’m definitely willing to pay top dollar to bring that talent and experience into the squad.

He's 28 till he's 29.

Scott is a decent player, may go on to be a top player. Bruno is already a top player. MLS has a higher ceiling than Scott too. Bournemouth have already turned down nearly £70m for Scott. He'll cost roughly as much as Bruno. The only argument for Scott is a balance sheet one as he's younger and can be sold in future for more than Bruno.

Bruno is better than Scott though. It’s not particularly close either.

It’s a ‘waste of money’ in a very nebulous sense. We’re not in financial difficulty so any money that improves our odds of success in the near term is well spent.

If Bruno is a rotation option for title winning midfielders then that’s an excellent outcome.

Bournemouth beat us and then Newcastle a week later, both away games. I read Scott was man of the match in both games, so I think it is is a lot closer than you think. Which is probably why most top clubs are sniffing around after him and Bournemouth are fighting to keep him.

Bruno is just what we need. He’s a real talisman. Creative, dynamic and match clever.

I’m struggling to find different ways of wording it but we are literally at the top of the ‘potential’ cycle with our squad. We have to cash our chips now.

There will be a time when we need to rebuild and then we can talk about ‘potential’ again. Besides, we do have 3-4 highly talented young players. That’s a reasonable amount for a squad expected to win now.

Also in addition to be a better footballer, Bruno is far more experienced and a leader. There’s value in that too.

JazzG Guimaraes was coming back from an injury in this game and only played 30 minutes off the bench so not a great example.

He's basically the same age Fernandinho was when he signed for City and they got a decade out of him. Who knows how many seasons he'll play for us?

More importantly though, if we sign Bruno and win back to back titles it's going to be hailed as a genius move even if he does a Casemiro and gains 200 pound on his vacation next year.

Mirth Yep. In the US, they call it a championship window and we are definitely firmly in it. We need to capitalize on every trophy chance we have now and make decisions that maximize those chances.

samthegooner I'm not saying I am against Bruno, I really like him as a player and we should have signed him years ago. I'm just saying for similar money I'd rather invest in someone like Scott. Purely hypothetical as it seems like they don't want to sell him no matter what. Neither improves our first XI imo but Scott gives us more years and I think could reach a higher level.

I agree and these windows of trying to win won't stay open for long but I think we need to throw more money at improving our XI than massive money on CM backup. If we have the money for both fair enough.

samthegooner on this concept, I've started to worry the purse things have been tightened and the Kroenkes are happy they have their title. Look at the way they've let the Nuggets stall and wasted most of Jokics best years after their title. Not sure they have the appetite we have for a long sustained period of dominance.

There were other clubs after him but he wanted us. And a red flag for what? Being the 20 goal striker we were crying out for an winning the league and getting to 2 finals.

TambourineMan exactly, we desperately need a rotation mid who's not going to see the midfield level drop when he comes in. Bruno/Zubi is as good as any other midfield pairing in the league. Zubi would be the best midfield partner Bruno has had in years, maybe ever.

Doc I definitely think Arteta wants him after seeing us without Ode last season. Eze plays 10 in such a different way and we missed that sort of dictator when Ode was out. Bruno makes a lot of sense with the players we have.

Scott was my joint MOTM against City in the game that won us the title. I am for signing both Scott and Guimaraes and dealing with the complications later.

Sadly you'd need God's gift to bullshitting to convince a PL player to put off a transfer to a big club for a season. One ACL or torn hamstring and their career progression will dip staggeringly.

Scott has been THE young midfielder in the PL that's caught my eye. I think there's some sort of face blindness going on and PL teams have confused Elliot Anderson and Scott, because the latter has more going for him.

But our club is the one with the scouting team and strategy that built a title winning squad and made us CL finalists. I don’t understand why we overrated the scouting department or transfer strategy of other clubs when we’ve actually got proven results, on the whole.

Football isn’t about the ‘’starting 11’ anymore. PSG have proven that quite successfully.

And Scott isn’t improving the starting 11. I’m just really struggling to get excited when you have a player whose just completed 30+ league games in a season vs someone who could run a premier league midfield in their sleep
