samthegooner Got to agree, man. What are we going to do with Tonali? Play a Rice-Zubimendi-Tonali midfield? Fucking hell, you'd need a Ronaldinho-Ronaldo-Rivaldo attack in front of that to offset the level of grind and clunk that would bring to the table.

Given that football's swung towards being extremely structured, I think we need to go hard on finding 'unstructured' or creative types that can do something different and impact the game.

Tonali isn't that.

SimplyTheBest Yup- I'd be more apt to bring in a creative and highly technical midfielder and push Odegaard deeper in the buildup than to bring in another physical and hard working CM like Tonali. I know that's selling Tonali's skillset short a bit as he definitely is an above average passer but we need more technical ability in our midfield since IMO its clear that we over-recruited physicality in the last two windows. I would either target a more traditional 10 or bring in a world class LW and allow Eze to play the Odegaard role. In the latter scenario, I would like to have the more advanced midfield position to be on the left predominantly, as opposed to where Odegaard plays off the right, so that Eze can play in the areas where he is most dangerous - the left half space and coming centrally from the left.

Agreed - if you look at our recruitment from 22 onwards - we've definitely over indexed on physicality and that's why one of our greatest strengths back then which was playing out the back has become so inconsistent. If I had to categorise our signings for whether they fell in the technical or physical bucket I'd go with the following

Maybe the summer of 22 broke Arteta and he's now swung in the other direction.

daredevil That loss in the 22/23 run in to City where they would just whack it up to Haaland and he and DeBruyne played a two man game to basically beat us by themselves 3-1 was the tipping point in my opinion. Afterwards, Arteta definitely focused more on physicality since we got a bit overwhelmed during that match. The problem is that City had some players like KDB that had both and clearly that's more of a unicorn profile. I'd argue there are some folks out there like Morgan Rogers or Gibbs-White that have a bit of that combo but nothing to the extent KDB did.

daredevil he has been obsessed with dominance and physicality from the start and generally thats fine, most managers have their quirks but they need to keep it in check.. Wenger was the same, leaning into technique/attack more, and let it get out of control in the later years were we couldn't defend for shit and got bullied.

It's gone too far now and you end up with players like Gyokeres... Arteta needs to course correct asap before it's too late, if it's not already..
