Loved that 2nd goal. Exactly what those two players were signed for. What a difference actually having a centre forward attacking the 6 yard box makes when someone fizzes it across.

Cannon he feels like he might be the closest analogue we have to Gyokeres stylistically so I'd be up for that. I'm not really up for watching him just running the ball out of play down the left wing anymore, but I think it's clear time is running out, if it hasn't already, on him in that position.

There's been a remarkable decline in the directness of Martinelli's play since last time I watch him a couple years ago, and it's probably (do correct me if I'm wrong) because he hasn't been allowed to play to his strengths for so long. He was an awesome dribbler cutting in from the left. And I don't mean dribbler in the pointless sense of a Savinho or a Doku; I mean he did it like Cristiano Ronaldo used to do it once he got wise to what worked and what didn't. Lots of running power, made sure to beat his man, and then heading for the box.

That's exactly the same style that led Gyökeres to score 120 goals in the last two seasons, but I reckon there's a big difference in starting centrally and drifting left to escape markers, and starting isolated out wide. Whenever Martinelli has played this season his job has been to act as a corner angle to stretch the pitch, and it must be horrible for him to play that way. Double marked at all times, nowhere to go but opting for a backpass to someone who then brings the ball back into midfield, and no one thanks him for it at the end of the day either.

If we're not going to get any proper striker as backup to Gyökeres I'd try to convert Marty. There's literally nothing to lose in doing so at this point.

No, you're quite right. He's half sacrificed and neglected his natural gifts for Arteta, all for the sake of creating width and tracking back to cover some of the paddock we've been leaving in front of Gabriel.

I get annoyed by the relentlessness of our online fans baiting Martinelli now. Saw a Facebook thread on Calafiori's pre-assist today in which literally twenty scrubs had commented with variations of "thank God it wasn't that idiot Martinelli on the end of that" ... poor bloke wasn't even on the pitch at the time and he's getting whipped for imaginary errors. It's undeserved.

Klaus Martinelli has never been an "awesome dribbler cutting in from the left". Do you think Arteta is telling a player, hey, you might dribble like Ronaldo, but actually only Saka is allowed to cut inside, you have to dribble into cul-de-sacs on the outside for the integrity of my tactical system?

Look at Martinelli's PL goals/assists from 22-23. He is not cutting inside at all. For his goals, he is receiving the ball either in behind the defense or in dangerous positions in the box. His assists come from outside positions. As we have become a more established force in the Prem, teams have adjusted, and the space in behind that Martinelli used to thrive on has significantly decreased. Now he is in a position where he has to take on his man more often, and he fails as a dribbler and he knows it, and that is driving his confidence down. You want Martinelli running and taking 1, 2, 3 touches max before smashing the ball. I can see the CF experiment a little bit, unlock his instinctive run and smash play, but probably more as a substitute than a starter.

Yep. He will bring in energy, chase balls, has quick feet when he wants to shoot and should be an asset against tired CB legs in last 25. Gyokeres will need rest as well with games coming thick and fast.

Ugh, i have trouble reading most Facebook threads about Arsenal (or football in general). Most people on there have literally no idea about football and just say the same shit spouted over and over again. It makes my head hurt reading most of it. Burnwinter Always thought of Marty as more of a forward than a winger, and just like strikers they need their confidence. If they get blunt it's over.

I reckon Klopp understood the potential of Martinelli because he played football in a way that made use of Martinelli's talents. Think it's also noticeable that the one season we presumably played more attacking football he racked up 15 non-penalty goals. That's more than most strikers put up in a good season.
