I don't think this is correct. I think the whole serial bottler narrative is an unjustified retrospective reconstruction.
We did not fall apart in 23-24 - we went 16-1-1 down the stretch. City were just a bit better.
Last year's injury crisis I think would be harder to attribute to Arteta's style/demands/rotation policy. This year, maybe.

RowJimmy we froze with that villa game though, they weren't particularly good they didn't bring some clever tactics we just got beat when it mattered and took the control out of our hands. We should have been able to win that but it's been the story of Arteta's Arsenal.

USArsenal there are always injuries, always excuses. It was absolutely bottled. Losing 3-0 at home to Brighton isn't on Rob Holding alone.

Qwiss Oh, i don't disagree.. But that was also early days when we did not have quality backups in all positions. thats all i meant. That was the biggest collapse.. 23/24 was not a collapse, we got eclipsed by a City team that went 17-1-0 while we went 16-1-1 in our final 18 games.. And last year, well we were never in the running, so that isn't really bottling in the same sense as 22/23..

Agree, that was a spectacular collapse that cannot be blamed on poor Rob alone.

In hindsight, I feel we should've won it in 22/23, regardless of the 'phase' we were apparently in. You've got to make those positions count. The club should've pushed the boat out on investment and Arteta should have found a way to get that team over the line.

Oh actually I think I'm confusing that with 23/24 when we had that ridiculous end stretch of the season, only to be outdone by an equally ridiculous City stretch.

samthegooner we should've won it that year too, frankly. A big effort but bombed entirely winnable games that cost us in the end.

Agree the other 2 weren't bottling it. This season would be a massive bottle job if we fail though.

23/24 was the most annoying because those last 5 months we were the best team in the league and all the metrics showed it. Although you could say the same about the first half of 22/23.

We haven't reached either of those half season highs this season and even if we win all of our remaining games (highly unlikely) we will finish a point off the 23/24 total but still win it. Although I don't see that happening. My guess is we will finish on 82 and City 83.

22/23 was exceeding expectations not helped by saliba getting injured

Saliba to holding (who 2 months later couldn't make the palace bench) was like going from Cambell to washed up Silvestre

In 22-23 we gave up two 2nil leads in consecutive games and immediately after drew with an awful Southampton side at the Emirates. Then after good wins against Newcastle and Chelsea, got spanked by Brighton at home. Definitely bottle-ey vibes there for me.

and even at our absolute best under arteta in 23-24 when we needed to win all our games we fell on our ass at home against villa.

It really was. When Jesus headed in that second, considering how the league season had gone up to that point, I thought there was absolutely no way in hell we wouldn't go on to win the league from that point. Alas.

Anfield has been the source of two of the most traumatising Arsenal moments in recent memory. The other one - of course - being the CL in 2008.

EDIT: A little generous to call that second one "recent" I guess.. christ, we're getting old and time is flying.. how is that game almost 20 years ago!?
