What elite mentality did our opponents tomorrow get from winning the micky mouse cup in 2008 or Swansea and Birmingham etc.

The only reason teta is taking it seriously because wether he believes it or not a 6 year gap for a trophy is weighing down on him - However we blatantly rested saka/trossard for the semi and that meaningless inter game which cost us

League Cup being an indicator of future success is a fallacy. The likes of Mourinho and Guardiola won it early doors and then went on to win other trophies because they had deep squads with plenty of quality, not because of the cup itself.

SimplyTheBest I disagree. The league cup gave those players a taste of winning though especially at Chelsea in 05 when many (Terry, Lampard, J.Cole) never won before.

Also, don’t forget our own George Graham - winning the league cup, his first trophy with us, was instrumental in winning subsequent trophies imo.

The league cup final is very important for us not just in the context of this season but next too (if Arteta is still the manager). Don’t underestimate getting the monkey off the back, will be a huge weight off our shoulders.

That Chelsea team went the whole league campaign losing one game. Hardly a team which needed a LC win to push them over the edge.

Sicario2 plenty of other teams have won it and gone on to win fuck all afterwards. The ones that did are the ones that were probably going to do so anyway; including our lot under George.

In our case specifically, I'd say the concern is that the manager has directed more effort towards winning the league cup than he should have, putting success in the league and Europe at risk. If we'd got through to the final playing squad players and kids, I don't think we'd be as worried.

I don't necessarily think anyone has said "winning the league cup means you win more." But for a group who have never won anything together and are constantly reminded of it and all the pressure it comes with, why would them going to Wembley and winning a cup together not be a good thing for them? I don't think I've seen a convincing answer for that yet.

QuincyAbeyie but we have a pretty big squad right? Why haven't the extra games mattered for City/Chelsea etc in the past? Didn't they also play full strength teams in the semi final?
Now that we're in the final do people genuinely want to lose it? Would playing some sort of youth team and losing 8-0 to City be somehow better for us?

Mirth that's all fair enough. We had a kind enough draw that probably a bit more rotation and resting should have happened in the earlier rounds. Once you're in then the semi final you absolutely should be trying to win it.
