Most impressive thing has been the realisation that focussing on one player simply doesn't work. Last summer we put all our cards in on Sesko & Nico Williams and ended up with Sterling on loan. He is talking to multiple targets, seeing where a deal can be done and probably as a club we then decide which route we move forward with.
If we get Eze, we can then focus on moving some players on and then later in the window Rodrygo may come available. We have got ourselves into a position where if that deal isn't feasible or isn't on we have got the numbers in to deal with our shortages out wide in Eze & Madueke. Rodrygo might decide next month he doesn't want to move, can't then be scrambling around. Important to get as many players in for preseason, the ones who come later in the window always need more time to settle in.
While Gyokeres probably wasn't our first choice it is clear that Leipzig were not willing to be flexible around Sesko and priced him out of a move, rather than spending the whole summer trying to work an angle we moved on and decided it was Gyokeres. It also gives clubs the impression we won't have the piss taken out of us. We've stood firm with Sporting as well and Gyokeres camp, can't have agents taking the piss either. Look at how Brentford are dealing with Man Utd, they know they want the player and will drag this out and know eventually Man Utd will either meet their demands or come close to get the deal done. When other clubs know you are a pushover they will take the piss, that is business. As a business you need to be able to walk away from a deal if it doesn't work.
Asterix Wenger needed someone to challenge him but also take some work load off him. His job was not to go around finding talents on the cheap so it made us richer but to win us trophies and I think he got caught up in his own hype around how he makes stars. Wenger also got caught up in the civil war at the club. Right now Kroenke's own the club so they can spend as much or as little as they want, they have full control. Back then Kroenke's rightly or wrongly were gonna starve the club of investment to push Usmanov out. I don't think the coaching stuff is where Wenger got found out, it was simply the piss poor transfer policy and having a badly balanced squad. A lot of this was down to poor recruitment but also down to lack of investment in the squad over years. We've seen with Arteta we have had to spend a lot in the last few years to overhaul the squad.
