On, I get that it’s not all down to Arteta, but it’s mostly down to Arteta.
My point is you can send that ball in behind a high line for him to chase at least 5 times a game. We have the ball more than most, he’s a willing runner and times his runs very well. We did it one time yesterday, and goal. If we are really optimizing for Gyokeres, I expect us to have him drift away from the central position more often, and let the midfielders fill in the gaps. I expect us to see him caught offside a few times a game, but the payoff will be worth it. We’d see a 30 goal a season striker no doubt about it.
Also, once teams start to plan for and account for him, their starting point becomes deeper and they commit an extra defender maybe, opening up even more space across their backline for our other attackers and midfielders.
That said, he really needs to improve his back to goal game. It’s so bad I’m beginning to find it funny. Needs a lot of help from the coaching crew, but not sure it’s worth investing time and effort into at this stage of his career.
