Sicario2 He reminds me of Luis Suarez and Alexis Sanchez in the sense of how he relentlessly drives at defences and constantly puts them on the backfoot with his dribbling.
If things don't go well for strikers in a game they tend to drop off. Gyökeres works like a madman instead to create something, and a lot of those scrappy goals you see in the compilations - the shots through the keeper, the not quite clean strikes from imperfect angles, etc - are a direct result of that work. Other strikers don't score these because they don't make them happen to begin with.
The cup final was like that: Sporting was barely the second best team on the pitch for most of the game. Gyökeres had like 20 ball touches but he ran himself into the ground and in the 100th minute, literally the last second of the game, he chipped the ball over a tackling Andre Silva and broke into the penalty area where he was brought down, and then took the penalty himself:
Smashed it so hard the net nearly broke. Di Maria looked like he was gonna cry on the bench haha, Benfica thought the game was done and had taken him off to save his precious legs.
Sporting ended up winning 3-1 in extra time and Gyökeres had a key pass for both of the other two goals. People look at the highlights and see a penalty and nothing else and are being dismissive, but Sporting's attack for 100 minutes in that final was one bloke going to war against an entire team, and winning.
