Mirth nah, loads wanted Eketike. Isak was a pipe dream and most people recognised that. Eketike was the guy to get and he was my guy all the way leading up to the summer window - was very annoying seeing him to go to Liverpool.

There can be no forgiveness, we Gyokeres haters need to stand together, hold the line call them all out 😆 But seriously yeah this guy isn't it, I had kind of made peace with him not being able to perform against the top sides but even the lesser sides he really should be doing better.

Hopefully Jesus can stay fit and Havertz is back soon, there is a title to be won we can't be carrying players in this team.

Been thinking that for months. I can see why we wanted Sesko over Gyokeres but the complete lack of interest in Ekitike is baffling. That guy should be leading our line, I don't know if it was a money thing but surely if we had moved early Frankfurt may have shown flexibility?

Yeah.. it was obvious he was going to be shit.. hopefully he can find some form and get some goals, then we should try to get rid in the summer, should still have some value in the market.. and he seems like a good guy who wants to play football... But has no business playing for a title challenging premier League side.

This is not a shit player. Even shit players have balls go in off their heads if theyre in or around the box long enough eg the Wolves goal today. Viktor needs to hold his hand up, but we aren't doing this cat any favors whatsoever with the way we are set up. I had hoped bringing him in would signal a willingness to change our approach to a more direct style and we seemed to be going that route earlier in the season but my word how sharply we have reverted to the this works for Merino style. It's Artetas comfort zone obviously, and it has never won us trophies.

Basically we are doing the same shit we were doing last season with a deeper squad. Despite all the talk about having different style players who can change the puzzle we are playing the exact same game plan regardless of personnel. It's insane.

Stuff like this he has to be doing better, he has to be making that run earlier and it is a tap in. If the ball doesn't come there than that isn't his fault.

I do think he is better than what he is showing for us. Sometimes it feels like he is playing within himself, he needs to mentally have more of a killer mindset. He should be tearing this Wolves team apart, these are the games he needs to step up in.

This has been my main criticism from pretty much day one. His movement in the box is poor. This applies to crosses, like yesterday, but also in more general, like the parry from Sanchez away to Chelsea. He reacts to where the ball is, instead of making the run before the ball comes into the right area.

He is probably a decent forward in a more open style of play, but our rigid, methodical and slow positional play is not for him. Complete miss.

^ Yeah that video is pretty damning. Gyokores needs to be working to get in a position to be first to a ball across the box as soon as the ball is making it's way through to Saka. Instead, he doesn't react in any meaningful way until after Saka has played the ball. That isn't good enough.

What a ball that is by Saka by the way. Someone in the match thread said we don't have anyone S tier in attack - we do, it's him.

Thing about that chance is he's had one or two like that that have been explicitly noted in the past few ways.

Timing that run is a technical issue as much as striker's instinct, so either our training is faulty or he's stubbornly failing to learn. You'd hope getting slaughtered by press and fans for being slow off the mark would be an incentive.

The runaway chances against diminutive and slower Portuguese defending will never come in the Premier League, but we knew that before we ever signed him.

If we’re not willing to play early balls in behind or even risky passes into the box for him to receive with back to goal, this guy is pointless. The one time we did the latter yesterday he turned and got a shot away. He’s not blameless though as his movement has not been good enough. Five touches in one half is shocking no matter what position one plays in.

Out attacking play and attacking style is dogshit with a side of cat shit. We “laugh at ManUtd” but they create more chances than we do, and it’s not even that close. We have nothing to lose from playing more direct and getting more out of this guy, who we paid good money for and are stuck with. It will also get the most out of our other attackers.

I would hate for us to completely change how we play and focus on trying to get the best out of a decent to good striker. He has shown countless times that when played in behind or through - he doesn't really have the pace or strength to consistently take advantage. His low touch count is also a direct result of him always being on the last line waiting to be released in behind.

I'd like someone to name one team that plays early balls or risky passes in behind to constantly release the CF. Haaland also regularly registers very few touches in many games but the difference is he capitalises on the opportunities he does get - which Gyokeres doesn't. Near enough every striker in world football comes shorts, drifts wide, combines and then also runs in behind. He needs to vary his game and stop playing like Inzaghi and I think he can do it.

Even if we do switch our style of play to be more 'direct' which I don't buy this argument tbh since that is not how teams play against us... He hasn't shown enough to make it worth it... if he was maybe anywhere close to Haalands level of ability you could maybe argue that it is worth the sacrifice.. but build i team/style around him? Seriously why? We are not floating around in mid table here....

Even his so called strengths that would suit this style more have come up short so far.. Can't beat defenders with his speed, can't beat them with his power... and when you are lacking in the technique department that doesn't leave much else.. I'm seeing someone who is putting in soo much effort but getting so little reward because he doesn't have any significant advantage to leverage.. can't understand how someone so jacked get out muscled so easily, his balance seems terrible...

Fair play to him though, when playing against lesser opponents he managed to maximise his advantages which indicates he is a smart player... but that has all but gone now.. I think he will still improve once he has had more time in the league, and can be used as an option... but it ain't going to be anything drastic.

More convinced than ever now that this team is not suited to having a target man.. We need to score more goals, sure.. but with our functional midfield... give me more central creativity from the striker to unlock defenses..

I think he'll improve a bit. And I think he's suffered a bit by way of being signed as a Plan B then played in Plan A due to Havertz's injury. This in turn shows the problem with the "verticality" tactical theory of the summer: we don't get to be vertical as we please.

I don't think it's unexpected it's a rough adaptation against athletic, compact and deep Premier League defending. What's unexpected is that Gyökeres' mentality seems less ironclad than you might hope. He looks hunted and resentful on the pitch currently and that's not what we need from him.

That’s an absolute peach of a cross from Saka, but I have sympathy for Gyokeres - and frustration with Arteta - in that 9/10 times you would see Saka slow that attack, and slowly build to a left footed cross.
