Noni Madueke

Claudius he played quite alot at the world cup lot for a player who is not intended to be the main player and was pretty bad across the the tournament. The idea because he went shows he's a good player is a crazy way to approach assessing it. Tuchel totally screwed up with his decision in the tournament particularly the semi so he absolutely is capable of being wrong. No Saka in the semi but full match in the playoff an example of that stupidity. The idea that because a manager makes a decision that can never be wrong it's a very flawed position to take.

Claudius

awooga83 I'm not saying a manager can never be wrong. but i find it surprising that two bright and successful managers would both back this guy - while we keyboard warriors go off daily about how he is deadweight.

The calls to replace him with Nwaneri are the ones that are most staggering. Nwaneri still has big gaps in his game that affect how a team plays, not just limit him alone. He doesn't pass early enough, doesn't press, and doesn't have the stamina etc. He's still very much an isolation offense type of player, which isn't how Arteta plays. So thinking he goes in ahead of Madueke is just a recipe to frustrate one-self. He should prove himself in the Carabao Cup or over at Coventry with Frank. And then come and take his place.

Burnwinter I think the main focus of this thread is Madueke was a bad signing, the impact it has on Nwaneri or other sales absolutely is speculative but we didn't need to put outlay on a forward who has no end product and despite my stance even if you thought at the club we should go for him we shouldn't have paid Chelsea's demand. He was a player they actively wanted to leave and they needed to sell to help their financial circumstances. That's exactly where you low ball and offer.

On the one hand we are talking about not wanting to follow the market trends and value for other players we've been interested and crediting that will doesn't matter what the markets say. Buy then with a player like Madueke if well that's just what it costs on the market is a total inconsistent approach to recruitment. Chelsea paid £38m and he hadn't got better with them. This does raise questions about the clubs approach because this isn't a sudden suprise in terms of the player we got he was like this at Chelsea so how the hell did we not see it.

QuincyAbeyie

I don't think anyone would want Madueke this summer if he wasn't here, people are mostly just trying to defend what's already happened.

Qwiss

Madueke was bad at Chelsea and everyone who watched him there knew it, now he's bad at Arsenal and the rest know it too. Bad recruitment but we are stuck with him for at least one more season. Just a bad deal but it happens, we get most right but we are saddled with him for now. I just hope he doesn't turn into another Jesus, Vieira, Nelson situation.

Mirth

The thing that is frustrating about the Madueke recruitment is that the club over indexed on secondary attributes like physicality and pace without focusing on whether he can score, assist and make the right decision in the final third. Signing incomplete players can work if you’re mid table or pushing for top four because they offer some tactical options but we were beyond that point even last summer. Title challenging clubs should not go for ‘I can fix him’ projects.

Tzolis on the other hand likely lacks most of the attributes that Madueke has but he looks like he can make a decisive impact more often than not - so even though if the Greek probably needs a year to bulk up or level up his stamina most of us won’t mind because he’s also likely to be decisive in the interim.

Tl;dr - sign forwards that score or assist. Otherwise what’s the point

Meatwad

Claudius
and that list proves my point. bowen is now a championship player and the other two aren't wingers and definitely not better than him as wingers. england don't have many options.

tazmania

I'm not a Noni fan but we're exaggerating how bad he is. He's ok. It's most frustrating because dowman and Nwaneri lose minutes to him.

I'll support him until he's gone, with anger and frustration

--

tazmania Dowman doesn't "lose" minutes to him. He helps Arteta adequately manage Dowman's minutes.

Gunner89

How is he ok?

He doesn't score
He doesn't assist
He doesn't defend

His dribbling is pointless

No he's NOT ok, he has the productivity of a cb in one of the front 3 positions, probably worse than a cb if we're looking at gabriel

Gurgen

He is not OK, he is pound for pound one of the worst signings we’ve made

--

TambourineMan I disagree. What do you base that assertion on? 50m is just about the going price for players at his level. The squad was key for us last season. Two of the best managers in the game think he approximates adequately what a top player provides to get featured as back up at both club and international level.

Anyway I'm not really here to defend him - his shortcomings are clear. I think he's at about the same level as Gyokeres, but at least with him we know there's a genuinely world class player in rotation ahead of him in Saka, and possibly one coming up behind him. He's not a blocker and his minutes ideally are extremely limited (hopefully last season was the exception when it comes to Saka's availability).

Gunner89

Going price at his level? another bit of absolute nonsense - a few more million got semenyo, cunha, mbuemo - all far better than this crap

Further he was known to be crap from before which makes it worse

RowJimmy

Gunner89
Semenyo yes, Cunha and Mbeumo no.

Which club outperforms the market on all its purchases? Yeah, Madueke is probably high, but I never see you list out players we got for exceptional pricing like Tsolis, Odegaard, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori, Timber, and especially Trossard. Why do we never have discussions about where we have done really well? It's like expecting Kleiner Perkins or Sequoia to unearth the new Google every time they invest. Witchcraft

Gunner89 I expect this sort of argument from a Chelsea or Tottenham fan. Do better.

JazzG

Gunner89 What makes this funny coming from a Chelsea fan is I can't see a single a Chelsea wide player on that list...

Gunner89

RowJimmy Both are far better

Gunner89

Claudius

The fact is it was as obvious to anyone who'd seen him play he was bang average, it's not like you're plucking some one from a dutch league or something

Gunner89

-- Well your argument of similar players at 50-60m is quite frankly plain untrue

RowJimmy

Gunner89
Maybe for United. Neither of them would improve our team at all, either in comparison to Madueke or in themselves.

A broken clock is also right twice a day.

For all the people that hated the Madueke signing and saw it a mile off - you can bet your arse they also didn’t like us signing Ramsdale, spending 50m on White, signing Raya when we had Ramsdale, signing Havertz, signing another LB in Calafiori, the list goes on.

It does say a lot how much mental capacity goes into the one player in the squad that doesn’t quite live up to the standard, despite 90% of the squad doing a great job.

We will never have a situation where there aren’t any weak links.
