We went to Brentford and signed their no. 1 and captain for a combined £40m. We've paid Chelsea £115m for two of their reserve players (and made one of them our best paid player at the same time). Where's the correlation?

RowJimmy this does not make sense when the first XI is not good enough to go the distance. We should be improving the first XI and relegating the guys replaced into depth positions. That's what the best teams do.

TambourineMan I’m not saying he’s nailed on for the first 11 but he’ll get 50 appearances next season easy. I can see instances where we play Havertz and Gyokeres against a low block, for instance.

Maybe we’ve paid too much for him but City have done the same with so many squad players that contributed to their titles and Havertz has a 1 in 2 record. It’s not really a problem unless you’re Kronke’s accountant

Mirth It is a problem if we want to go for a game changer but can't because Havertz is blocking. It is a problem because it becomes a reference point in negotiations for other squad members. It is a problem because it makes him unsellable. Look what not caring about wages has done to Man United.

I think we have the best XI in the league. We ran out of gas and got injuries because of lack of depth. And our excessive number of draws and late concessions is similarly a depth issue, not a starting XI talent issue.
Maybe Rodrygo displaces Martinelli. That's it. IMO.

Havertz's isn't stopping us from signing a game changer - as evident by our activity this summer nor is Arteta looking to sell him. Arteta loves the guy. When Arteta wants to move someone on, he freezes them out. Having Havertz and Gyokeres is actually a fantastic outcome.

Also, for the record, Havertz wasn't a squad player at Chelsea - he started 30 out of the 36 games he was available for in his final season.

RowJimmy yeah I think we can only really upgrade on Martinelli in the first eleven as everyone else is top tier.

Ofcourse players like Mbappe and Vitinha would improve us but they ain’t available

Unsurprisingly, Madueke was named England’s player of the match.

“He was maybe over the course of the match the most dangerous, the most active,” Tuchel said of Madueke via England’s official website. “I could feel his hunger and the desire and determination to do the plan. He was one of the few who met the expectations.”

Madueke started the game against Andorra on the left wing, but then switched to the right flank after Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze replaced Cole Palmer in the second half.

“Right and left are the same for me, so I don’t really mind,” Madueke said of the tactical change. “I’ve been playing on the left for Chelsea in the last five or six games of the season, so right and left are all the same.

Exactly, we have depth and creativity issues.

The goal is to ensure that our first and best 11 are able to play together for most if not all season. The signings we are making/linked to address this.

I really don't see the issue here except "CHEALSEA's BINS/ BITCHES". And if you don't live on social media (free advice, don't), it reeeeally shouldn't be a problem. It's not your money, and no one has claimed it's hampering us from making other signings. All reports point to independent efforts for Eze and Gyokeres.

Regarding the player, Arteta apparently worked excellently with Sterling, turning him into one of the most productive wingers in the league in his prime. If he thinks he can do similar with NM, he's entitled to go for it. It's his club to manage. It's an expensive gamble, and if it fails, it's his head.

Question for you @TambourineMan , how would you evaluate this signing. Objectively speaking. Come end of the season?

I'm not Tambourine Man but for me it would be if his GA per 90 was hitting his xG and xA for this season or thereabouts. That would probably then mean he was saving our arses and raking us in a few points. He'll be a fan favourite if he achieves it.

TambourineMan Oh I know exactly why we are being linked to a striker. A lot of top clubs need a ready made striker this window yet apart from us no top club has even looked at Gyokeres. He is 27 years old and playing in Portgual, a league which probably worse than the Championship, I think I'll reserve judgement on whether this guy is all he is made out to be.

Our current £65m striker has 24 G/A in 31 games playing as a striker, that £65m striker was also one of our driving forces when we won 14 of our last 16 games and pushed City to the final game. Lets see if Gyokeres has that kind of impact for us, I'm not even sure he'd start over Havertz in key games.

Madueke is overpriced, I think we have paid too much for him but he isn't some fucking pub player like people are making. Stats below show him being one of the most effective player in the league and he is getting better.

We have scored a fuck load of goals for a team who haven't made a single good attacking signing. My trust will remain firmly behind the man who has taken us from 8th place to fighting for titles and getting into CL semis and pushing the best teams in the world, that works for me quite well actually. We need numbers and we are getting numbers in, not just people to make up the numbers but players who offer something completely different

When you say this, it doesn't make sense that you're sceptical about Gyokeres. Because the quoted part can be used about any signing we make. In fact, it's a sentence that tells me you don't think there's any point to have an opinion of your own about a signing because if Arteta wants someone then you'll be firmly behind him and agree, and vice versa.

It’s really odd Jazz. Folk seem blind to his talent. Every time we’ve faced Madueke he’s always been one of the few players who made me nervous. Reason being he has the ability to get past anyone and he carries such a threat.

Lookman gave me a similar vibe when we played Atalanta at their gaff. Gordon is another player who I feel can have his way with us when he’s in the mood

lorddulaarsenal He's not aesthetically pleasing on the eye and looks awkward on the ball so people are using that to write him off. He isn't worth the money we have paid but he is a decent player. Gives us a new dimension to our attack and if he is happy to join and play under Saka what more do we want? We've looked at other players who have decided against joining us because they play in Saka's position. Also gives us versatility as he can play both sides. Another thing which is rarely mentioned is how two footed he is.

Your point about how he played against us is spot on. Fergie used to put a lot of weight behind how players played against his Man Utd team, if they could perform against them for him that showed they had the character to play against anyone. Whenever we have played Chelsea he has been one of their bright sparks against us, on the whole we've dealt with him but that is more down to us being an excellent team defensively than him.

QuincyAbeyie We can all have our own opinion, personally would I have gone for Madueke no but I can see the thinking behind it.

If I'm honest I am very sceptical of Gyokeres, I want to believe he will do well here but I don't think he will. But when you look around, Isak isn't moving, Sesko has been priced out, Etikike similar so it doesn't really leave that many other options. So we then need to look at it from that angle, how many realistic options are there for us?

What I am saying is I'm not gonna go on strike as an Arsenal fan and say I want Arteta sacked or lose the plot over a player joining and I feel very strongly that Gyokeres isn't the right guy for us. If he joins us I'll firmly be behind him and he'll have my full support.

JazzG the problem is he reminds me of Gervinho. A lot of chaos, flashes of brilliance, clumsy but can be effective. My Chelsea friends (one of them a season ticket holder) told me he has one good game out of 6.

JazzG they signed 4 attackers and he saw the writing on the wall. its pretty clear they were planning to move on from him. its like real madrid not explicitly telling rodrygo to leave, but just leaving him on the bench every game so he comes to his own conclusions

Sicario2 He is a bit of a chaos merchant, probably what we need? We need someone unpredictable and willing to take risks. He has quick feet, two footed, how many games have you seen teams camped back and we struggle to break through? He is good at crossing in to the rear post, Havertz will love those crosses. He gets on the ball and adds urgency and gets the ball up the field quickly. He isn't worth £50m right now but he isn't some £25m player either, we probably overpaid by around £10m.

I actually liked Gervinho, am guessing I am in the minority lol. How could the defender know what he was going to do next when Gervinho didn't! Remember that game away against City when he played false 9 and he was so good. That miss in the cup killed his confidence.
