It's also really difficult to find a Zubimendi replace that's a back up. There's very few players with that ability and even a poor imitation would be hard to find.

If Zubimendi ever got injured, it's more likely that Rice would play as a 6 and Merino or Eze would be in midfield. So Norgaard is, for all intents and purposes, 3rd choice.

I think that in itself is an issue though. We saw what we lost from Rice against Chelsea when he plays that role. And Merino is yet to prove consistency at #6. So the solution needs to be that we are comfortable playing Nørgaard or <insert replacement>.

I think Arteta is just bad at rotating players. People speculated about White being shot physically, but he came in and was fine against Brentford; it just took three injuries for Arteta to actually play him. Ethan basically never gets more than a few minutes anymore despite playing well at the start of the season. Hincapie didn't get a minute until November and now he gets every minute. Lewis-Skelly was apparently a regular last season, and he never gets a start even though we all know that Calafiori's knee is going to give in at some point.

Unless Rice and Zubimendi force Arteta's hand by getting injured I don't think Nørgaard is going to play much either. That in itself is a bigger issue than the gap between first choice and backups.

I'd like us to sign the best up and coming 6/8 to rotate with Rice and Zubi next season and phase Norgaard out.

Also hope MLS will be given a chance in the middle this season. As he could be an internal solution and eventually phase Merino out.

Yes I think it is possible MLS could be that player but I wouldn't want us to put all our eggs in that basket.

Hahaha yes Merino is the perfect squad player. I was thinking more along the lines of him being 30 in the summer and succession planning.

New player takes Norgaard's spot, MLS eventually takes Merino's was my thinking but it definitely could be that we try MLS first until Norgaard disappears and then look to sign the up and coming 6/8.

Genuine question btw - it seems like most managers need their hand forced. There's just too much at stake to rest players in must win™ games.

daredevil Ferguson never fielded the same eleven basically. Still had his key players of course, but I remember scraps like Park and O'Shea coming in and winning matches against us. Park was his Merino: always threw him on to mark someone out of a Champions League game.

Meatwad This whole "play Skelly at 6" thing seems like wishful thinking. Not because I don't believe Skelly can learn the position, but because we don't train players up in competitive matches these days.

He did indeed - back when he had Mahrez, Foden and Alvarez sitting on the bench in his treble winning season. As much as I rate our squad - we're still a little way off having that quality of depth.

Pep is the best example but his bench was ridiculous.
