RocktheCasbah Yeah I have a ton of time for a fit Ødegaard, but I do wonder if he trusts his ankle fully. Was that the injury he had last season? He looks way too worried about rolling the foot whenever there's an opponent nearby and you can't play effectively as a 10 with that fear, because you always operate in congested spaces. The Martin I know and love would thrive at being allowed to play between the lines, but there's that hesitation now.

Maybe he just needs to take it easy for a bit, I dunno. It takes a lot of time to get back fully from ankle and back injuries because they affect so much of your movement. Nwaneri and Eze are certainly capable of sharing the burden with him this season though, which is great.

RocktheCasbah I mentioned this last season, it almost feels like the team is headed in a different direction to him. Partially why I was so keen on Eze joining was if that change happens sooner I think Eze could play there a lot.

Nwaneri is also a shout but he is 18 and don’t want to put unrealistic expectations on him. Hopefully Ode is just going through a bit of bad form and once his confidence picks up he’ll be back.

Odegaard was the best out of a poor bunch last week and I thought he started very brightly against Leeds. He was great with the ball. He was dropping deep but he didn't start deep, he dropped because Rice, Zubi and Cala weren't being able to progress the ball. It's for Arteta to sort honestly.

Zubimendi will be fine he is just finding his feet. In a few months he will be one of the best in his position.

RocktheCasbah if he keeps picking up knocks it completely changes his importance. He has to be available almost all the time for his role to make sense.

He just doesn't know what the hell his teammates are gonna do yet.

You can see he's exceptional already. If you're not sure how great his is just observe the positions his teammates play him the ball. He's marked and has no space and they still just zip the ball into him. Their faith shows you he's killing them in training everyday. It's the opposite of Sambi. He'd be open and the lads would think I'm not falling for that.

He was good until the final third of the game. Looked exhausted and probably should've been substitued for MLS with Rice dropping into 6. Think it'll take him a while to get used to the frenzied and manic nature of this league.

Zubimendi have been excellent so far. Both defensively and offensively.

Kel Varnsen I heard a podcast claim he'd been shown up by McAllister and Sobzlai. I only can assume these people didn't watch anything bar the foul for the free they scored from. Even then I thought it was a smart professional foul.

Qwiss It is one of those games where if we nicked a goal they'd wax lyrical about our tactics and how Arteta got it spot on and when it goes the other way then Liverpool showed why they are champions etc. No real thought about it, just sound bites.

JazzG I was thinking about this the other day...

Our midfielders are great individually but I am not sure they truly complement each other as a unit. Footballing sides that have a midfielder like Rice typically have a Pirlo or Vitinha type at the base. Zubi-Rice-Ode seems overly defensive.

Even Odegaard who I personally think is top class despite what his critics on here say, is not really a final 3rd player IMO (he can still score goals and play quality passes). He's in my opinion closer to Modric, Silva etc than KDB or Bruno Fernandez. I have noticed a lot of our fans expect him to play like the latter 2 though "why is he dropping so deep?!!!"

I'd like to see a midfield 3 of Eze and Odegaard and one of Zubi/Rice against the bus parkers (most teams at the Emirates) with Saka and Madueke out wide.

Too early to tell but my initial sense is that Berta has a taste for players who he thinks the market undervalues vs players that are necessarily elite. Potentially that was just a function of our recruitment strategy this summer (ie. prioritising quantity) though.

Don Pacifico I'm not sure that tracks with his time at Atleti. I'm not even sure it tracks here, zubimendi was excellent value but not his work. We drove down Gyokeres price. We arguably overpaid for Madueke. Eze we paid market value. Hincapie is quite expensive. Kepa and Norgaard are excellent value but they are back ups, that's exactly where you can afford to be getting value.

Because his dropping deep has been a gradual thing over the last 3 years. He wasn't playing like this in 22/23

Tactics These guys have never played together so will take a bit of times to really understand each other. It is why I said our best football won't come until the 2nd half of the season when the understanding should hopefully be a lot better.
