Dom defensively and athletically he's way better. Creatively he's not close.

It's a drop in standards. Is the Zubimendi and Norgaard combo better than the Partey and Jorginho combo of 2023? I'm a fan of Zubimendi but I'm going with 'NO'. Norgaard is a couple of levels below the other three so it makes our central midfield strength in depth weaker than in 23/24.

I'll become indifferent to this transfer if we sign a striker and winger.

Dom Jorginho of a few years ago maybe but you need to compare him to what he is replacing now. Zubimendi has it in him to be better than any version of Partey/Jorginho we have seen, that in itself Norgaard is just a backup player, I am guessing so we can find a younger play when we have more funds.

Another big area of improvement will be availability, Zubimendi averaging 45+ games a season over the last few years. Partey and Jorginho were massively unreliable in that department.

Dom he's never stood out to me, seems a bit of a typical PL plodder.

What annoys me most is the order of these signings. We urgently need both starting and backup level players in the front four yet the last eight or so signings (bar Sterling who Arteta never wanted) are all defensive guys

Dom Jorginho was decent but I think this is really exaggerating how good he's been. There are not "a couple of levels" between Arsenal era Jorginho and Norgaard.

I think we've done a good job of maintaining quality and depth at DM.

Good tactical transfer. A "Trossard", if not at Jorginho's or the Belgian's level and a bit older. Considering his limits, I'd say he's been chosen so as not to "kill" Skelly, Nwaneri and Dowman, and unlike Trossard will understand up front he's coming as a fringe player.

Meanwhile he's one hundred percent league ready, has leadership qualities, and "Skelly can play there" (I don't think Skelly can play there at this level, but I'd back him to learn and he won't any other way).

Finally he's coming for less than the season's wages of one of our stars, allowing us to release Partey with relative confidence, giving us a chance, but not a need, to swoop on a properly elite misfit at the end of the window. This is a far cry from signing Denis Suarez.

Coombs sure but none of our signings are about it these days. Our most serious links this window apart from Sesko (who's far from a sure thing fwiw) are a goalie and two DMs. You can't tell me you're not seeing a pattern at this stage

jones I don't disagree. What I don't want to hear is how busy everyone was renewing contracts and signing backup players that they couldn't possibly have done bigger and better business.

jones It's a bit of a false comparison. Partey is off because he didn't like the amount or duration of our contract offer, and we're letting him go because he's less useful when not starting, injury prone, and we're renewing his position in the starting line-up.

Sure if Zubimendi is injured or in bad form there's an arguable downside, and I fully expect we'll see Partey advocates saying he's not as good even on a few days he does fine, let alone makes an error.

But if Zubimendi isn't injured and is in form, signing a sub-elite contender to backfill Partey's departure congests the squad in one of the areas of the pitch we have bona fide Hale End talents, and also necessitates a higher risk, prolonged market search, when after all it seems the decision on Partey's future is a day old. Whereas now if someone like Jorginho pops up, we could make our move from a position of strength.

jones Partey is clearly better on the ball whereas he looks washed physically. Norgaard will be better in that respect.

Ideally we sign a shit hot talent but the management might be concerned how quickly Zubimendi can settle in so want an experience player around just in case. For the fee and wages, I don’t think there’s much wrong with this transfer.

Burnwinter I don't mind us replacing Partey, was ecstatic when we signed him but between him missing two seasons here and being an abject piece of shit I've no problem replacing him. Think we could've taken a punt on someone younger instead of going for an uninspired 30 something clogger but whatever.

What I don't get is why this is done immediately while we're dragging our feet when it gets to signing any warm body for our front three or God forbid look at Odegaard backup or compétition. We've run him and Saka into the ground to the point of breaking down but we're rushing to replace Jorginho who played like 15 minutes last season it's mad.

jones I'm worried by Ødegaard as a weak link. Saka less so. Firstly Saka is irreplaceable, secondly I reckon we're engaged in more than one prolonged market search for an elite winger behind the now very public Šeško and Gyökeres discourse.

The elite players (Rodrygo and Barcola, etc) always have multiple options, and greedy clubs and agents behind them. That's why securing the squad and market position with a "nothing" signing like Norgaard makes some sense. One "specific" and elite forward signing in July, and another later in August will be good business given this terrain, especially if it goes along with a dash of top tier opportunism. Pretty sure we'll also sell Martinelli if we do all that.

Qwiss it's mainly the passing, and there are levels between there. norgaard brings other things to the table, but it's largely things we already have alot of (pressing, height, leadership, organisation). we are losing an element of variety in a moment where staleness has permeated our play pretty deeply

Jorginho has won the champions league, European championship and was a contender for the Ballon D'Or at his peak. I'm not an ultra fan or anything, but the guy oozed quality despite not being particularly athletic. Norgaard may prove to be an ok signing, but he's never been close to the quality of Jorginho and Partey at their best.

Zubimendi is hopefully a lot more robust than Partey, we may not see Norgaard start as many games as Jorginho though.

Waiting for @RocktheCasbah to chime in but my feeling is Norgaard will prove to be a sound signing. Brentford are a really well run club so I'll be surprised he turns out to be a duffer.

Pepe LeFrits oh obviously, I'm thrilled about this... No, I get the logic. It's not a sexy signing by any means, but as a bit of relatively cheap depth, I can live with it. Gabs the Bee posted this on our WhatsApp earlier

JazzG we have more than enough physicality in our squad, we need someone nimble who can distribute the ball. Zubimendi fits the requirement, Norgaard could be a poor man's Rice but playing him alongside Rice would make Tony Pulis blush.

Can't fill the middle of the pitch with these BJJ wrestling types if we want to be a top team. Paris and Barcelona are the top 2 teams in the world and they have none, even Liverpool don't have as much physicality as us.

Speaking of Brentford I hope they are ok next season. Losing their manager, captain and top scorer could see them in trouble. They seem like a really fair club so hope they can make some smart signings and carry on competing.

Gazza M Zubimendi is an upgrade to the starting XI. We needed a good reliable back up who offers stability without taking away funds that we'll need to use in the attacking areas. And Norgaard managed more goal involvements last season in the league than Partey and Jorginho combined so I think their creativity and attacking play may be a little overstated. Having more legs in midfield will mean we don't need to keep Rice back baby sitting the DM too.

and herein lies the problem, we are for the most part going to need his passing ability far more than his defending. We are an attacking team who wants to impose our game on the opposition.

If Zubimendi is replacing Partey, I'd expect that to be an improvement in our passing from midfield and our overall ability to transition.

Norgaard is replacing Jorginho, who barely featured beyond closing out games (which you'd imagine Norgaard would be better suited to anyways).

Qwiss exactly this. Big Mik always talks about needing to be decisive in the box. Chrissy Norgaard is effective when defending and attacking in the pen area
