That is what top clubs should do, always look for opportunities and be proactive at getting players in.

But why goalkeepers? These pricks play until they're 90 anyway so there's no rush. Meanwhile the shelf life of a striker is 5-10 years. Take a big hit once like Liverpool did with Allison and move on. At some point someone has to put their foot down and tell Arteta he can't have any more keepers or fullbacks unless they're spare parts, and I think that's pretty much what happened.

Klaus I think the view is Garcia will has it in him to become one of the best keepers in the world, Raya is a decent keeper but he is never gonna be among the elite.

Funny you mention Liverpool because last summer they did similar and signed the Valencia GK and loaned him back. He’s back at the club this summer and probably will work under Allison with a view to take over from him.

JazzG But Liverpool aren't where we are right now. They haven't gone a couple of decades without winning the league. You can't swap your well-performing keeper every two years while you spend nothing in attack, and I'm happy someone in the club put a stop to this absolute nonsense. There has to be priorities.

Klaus we really tried to blow 70m on huijsen and Garcia, but luckily it fell apart. there's no justifying this kind of foolery any more

Bit of a shame hanging around Chelsea's bins is still one of our transfer strategies but I guess he's fairly experienced for a backup so should hopefully be at least half competent if he ends up being required straight away. Hope he's better than Sterling.

invisibleman18 to be fair, Chelsea sign so many players, all the players... it kinda makes sense to do a little bit of rummaging - as long as it's judicious. None of us wanted Arsenal to spend big money on a back up to Raya, so I find it very difficult to get upset about signing a keeper like Kepa for five mill.

invisibleman18 I get why people are hung up on the Chelsea connection but the second part of your post is far more pertinent than the club we're buying from.

That we've had some bad experiences buying from Chelsea shouldn't mean we ignore market opportunities (of which, I think most can agree, this is a good one).

Solid, sensible signing. Raya needs some proper competition and Kepa's a good enough starting keeper for half the teams in the league. I think he'll be good backup.

Buuuut...if he isn't solving any problems, I hope he provides some entertainment by openly challenging Arteta on the pitch like he did with Sarri because that'll be fucking funny.
