tazmania It's crazy to me. Yes he was very poor last season after returning from injury but the way people are talking, you'd think he was pretty 'meh' even before that! Best midfielder in the league in 23-24 and absolutely brilliant in 22-23. If he's still playing like he did post-injury last season - say, around November this season - then there is a big concern there and a conversation to be had, sure. But people claiming he needs upgrading at this very moment, without giving him a chance to reclaim his form in a fresh season, need to give their head a wobble and maybe watch some clips of the bloke during 22-24 because you're certainly not finding an attainable "upgrade" that'll give you a higher level than that.

tazmania Odegaard was a much bigger problem than Martinelli last season. TBH he's kind of similar to Martinelli in that he was at his best 3 seasons ago and hasn't recaptured that form since. Both need to have much, much better seasons this year. I think with our new additions they probably will but its down to them to prove it. I wouldn't mind some cover in case they don't.

Odegaard’s only problem is his injury. He has zero problems otherwise. People are quick to forget and even quicker to jump on a player who is obviously struggling physically.

It’s shit like this that has me concerned. Any top level creative midfielder understands the tactics at play and can read the scenario and should be exploiting the space every time. That's why we need Eze. He's the Odegaard backup, even though I think MLS can do it and Mikel doesn't mind pushing him really high up when inverting.

HomeSteak chance created happens when the player passed to gets a shot off. So it would not be chance created for Ødegaard, but for Saka if the cross is accurate.

Qwiss He was levels better in 22/23 imo. The entire team was, doesn't matter what the numbers say but 23/24 was not nearly as attractive football as the year before. We were more solid and not as reliant on Partey playing out his skin but we were sort of blunt force battering teams with set pieces and physicality, no finesse or guile to our play.

jones the team wasn't better in 22/23. the football was slicker, but the wheels were starting to come off by march. the 2nd half of 23/24 was the most well rounded we've ever been under arteta. there was plenty enough guile, allied to some of the most suffocating defending ive ever seen at arsenal. there were threads on here comparing the team to the invincibles, and I've never seen that happen before in the the 20+ years I've spent with this group of posters

true dat. I watched us beat Crystal Palace and Leeds in two home games in the space of a month around then. We won 3-1 and 4-1, but could easily have drawn, or even lost, the Palace game and Leeds had more than their fair share of chances in the second game. Chances, you felt, a better team might not spurn - enter Manchester City...

Look how easily we were nullified in Europe, we were lucky to go past Porto and thoroughly shown up by Bayern. Think we failed to score in five or six league games as well battering piss poor sides like West Ham or Sheffield doesn't change that - the same margin based attacking issue came back to fuck our season in 24/25 where injuries made it 10x worse.

Yeah, 23/24 was a great season, our second highest point total (89, behind only the Invincibles' 90) and most goals scored for a season in our history (91). And we went on a 'near perfect' second half of the season at 16-1-1 and we were scoring at a blistering pace (and not just relying on set pieces). I don't know how anyone can say our 22/23 team was actually better than 23/24.

USArsenal there are ways to analyse a season that go beyond reading a stat sheet.

Newcastle in 23/24 when they finished outside of Europe scored more goals than any Arsenal team in history except for the 23/24 team. Were they a better attacking side than 02/03, 03/04 or 07/08?
