Gurgen He's defo bitter about things as well. Always been rumoured he was offended to only be offered a youth role.

Just like Gerrard/Lampard and a lot of players in that generation they simply are not cut out to be coaches, it is a completely mindset and skill set required and they don't have it. There is defo some bitterness towards Arteta but he was always destined to be a top coach. When he left Arsenal he was head hunted by Pep and Pochettino tried to convince him as well. They all knew he had qualities to be a coach. Kind of like how you can see Jorginho being a good coach at some point, some players have it and some don't.

Just to add to the fact this is rage bait all of a sudden Man City's Community shield win is being counted as a trophy, if that is the case then Arteta has 3 in the last 5 years. But that doesn't really suit the narrative.

Gurgen he's clearly a thinker who understand the game deeply, but he's always struck me as a not-so-great communicator. if he was coaching me his communication style would get on my nerves lol

Gazza M With Thierry I'm convinced it's the attitude he displayed on the pitch that hinders him as a coach. You can't really lead a group of people with that "disappointed genius morally outraged by your 90% perfect through ball" Gallic shrugging Thierry used to indulge in.

I mean, he said we should have won at least a cup in recent seasons and really need a striker but only ended up with Sterling this season. None of that is wrong?

invisibleman18 whether it's right or not is kinda irrelevant. For someone so closely associated with the club to stir the pot is pretty shitty in my mind. We get enough of that from the pundit class, we don't need it from one of our own.

Burnwinter The worst thing is for those of us who remember, he couldn't hit a barn yard door in his early days but senior players around the club rallied around him and put their arm around him. Especially Dennis Bergkamp and helped him towards fulfilling his potential as a player. When it was Henry's time to put his arm around players, well we all remember his treatment of Reyes and that death stare he used to give on the pitch. Reyes had his struggles on and off the pitch and probably never would have become the player we hoped but Henry's treatment didn't help. No coincidence that when Henry left that our club had a bit of a bounce back, 07/08 was probably one of our best seasons under Wenger after the Invincibles and the players all played better and more freedom now that he was gone.

I love Henry as a player, gave me some of my best memories as an Arsenal player and arguably our best ever player. But he isn't the saint or Mr Arsenal likes to portray himself to be.

Some of what Henry said was suspect, but I value his opinion. It also comes from a place of caring versus the northwestern pundits who only want to berate and belittle our institution. He wants to see Arsenal do well, he wants exciting, attacking football.

I do think not sufficiently discussed is that the age of Guardiola ball will subside. All the teams have now caught up to these tactics, so it really requires you to have outstanding players if you are going to be successful with this approach. The lesser teams have all learned how to defend in a low to mid block and neutralise the possession super teams like Arsenal and Manchester City. so these big teams need to renew - and this will come with I think formation and talent changes. So much more speed up front to get chances before teams set up, physicality for set pieces. This will also lead to the eventual return of scoring centre forwards. Just a hunch

That's all well and good but to not think about the optics of what he's said is clueless at best.

Don Pacifico unsurprisingly my view isn't really harsh as others because I do agree with what he's said. But I think elite sports starts do attribute significance to winning that's what drives them to be at the top of their game so him having those views I don't think it's that usual. The people at the top of any sport are unlikely to view being amongst the top contenders as the outcome they seek, that's what competitive sport is about

The problem is that he said it for click and views, but I mean, that is his job. To get click and views, and boy did he get them lol.

But other then that? He said that he is not disappointed with our season, just that he gets it when people ask Arteta, when will he win anything. Did not even talked about CL or the league, like anything. I mean, what is the problem with that? He said he expected to at least get to a cup final in the last 3 years based on how much we spent, I agree. He said that to not win anything in 6 years is too long for us, I agree with that too.

Then he talked about our players always getting hamstring injuries, he blamed the staff not Arteta. Here I do not agree, as I blame Arteta, even if he has become a little better at rotating, it's still not good enough.

The Sterling part was strange, I did not get it...maybe he meant that we knew that we needed something up front(not necessary a number 9) and we only got Sterling? In that case he is right again, we have needed someone in attack for years and at the end of the summer we got..... Sterling. I mean, maybe I'm over the top, but someone needs to get sacked for that.
And it's not that we wanted a striker and we decided to get Sterling, he is wrong there. We spent the striker money on Califiori.

Said it before, I'll say it again; the issue for Arsenal last summer was not the funds they had, it was the availability of the players they wanted to sign. To suggest otherwise, I think, is a major misrepresentation.

I watched the interview. Oddly the main message was pretty reasonable, he even said that the first 3 years under Arteta shouldn't be viewed harshly as there was a lot that needed to change and that Arteta has done a good job overall but trophies are massively lacking. It is weird to be second in the league for multiple years but not reaching any finals.

But he was trying to stir the pot a bit, probably for Sky or because he's bitter that the club keep him an arms length away.

RocktheCasbah yeah. Don’t know why we are obsessed with this idea that getting one player automatically stops us getting another. Especially defenders and keepers who are typically cheap versus strikers who cost a shit load and are rate.

It’s well documented that we looked at two Sesko at the start of the summer and that failed. So it’s not like we didn’t go out looking for a striker.

Does it have to be the case that the hypothetical striker cost a maximum of 40m? When I hear it makes sense that we aren't in for Marmoush because of his salary demands or Kvara because of the agent fees, it's all just money in the end.

To be clear I haven't ever had much of a problem with Henry's punditry, I've just got my theory about why he hasn't enjoyed success as a leader I guess.

The pundits will all shoot their mouths off, but if I'm saying we'd better well in contention for the league by Christmas or Arteta should get the sack, I'm not too far off.

Agree, but something obviously went wrong last summer. We all know Raheem Sterling was not the plan. I don't know about you, but it doesn't seem that mad to me to think that with our sporting director dreaming of CEO roles elsewhere, he might have taken his eye off the ball last summer. It's not Arteta's job to ID talent, but if he wasn't doing it, then who was?

It is also, of course, possible that Arsenal either explored moves for the players you mentioned and didn't follow up, or simply didn't fancy either of them. That doesn't in itself mean the process itself is at fault, at the end of the day, it's just a judgement call.

Sicario2 it doesn't change anything. There's no way Henry saying those things is a net positive on our ability to win stuff.

Sicario2 I think we're all agreed Arteta needs to win something next season, it kind of follows he needs to be looking like he's gonna win something by Christmas.

I would still harbour doubts about removing a coach who gets us to a high 80s- 90+ points total, but I do also understand we need to get a big one over the line at some point.

It feels like this club has been put on hormone blockers which prevents it from pursuing/landing any top drawer attacking talent.

Either that, or we've made our bed with Jesus, Trossard, Havertz and Martinelli and there isn't any space without selling them.
