The absolute limit of its validity would be if McNicholas had heard from a "source close to Arteta" that he could leave as very early advance leverage on his contract renewal. I don't believe for a second that Arteta wants to leave Arsenal. As far as the rest of it goes I think the entire world thinks it's beyond time he won a major trophy.

Qwiss -- you think Barcelona is interested? not sure he jives with their style, nor are his player requirements going to fit with Real Madrid when Xabi Alonso is already struggling (done) with that.

Bayern or Italy seem the next logical steps in my mind.

I could also see him retiring after coaching Arsenal to two large achievements (league, and CL or FA).

Germany or Italy is a step down these days. PSG too but he did play for them and seems fond of them.

In fairness he’s not had many, but often when he’s had an option or two he’s chosen not to use them and at times it’s been costly.

19 games in and we are tracking 90 points this season. The key thing is to keep our key players fit, if we do that I see no reason why we don't go well into 90s. That imo is what stops us winning the title, the amount of injuries we are dealing with is ridiculous and if we keep going like this it could cost us.

Incredible stats really, first half of the season despite the injuries we have shown phenomenal consistency.

JazzG there's no denying our numbers have been strong in many aspects so far. the squad has been stretched to a ridiculous degree at times, moreso than any rival team, and we stand 6 points clear. add that to the fact that we're tracking 15+ points ahead of last season from the equivalent fixtures, and the picture looks good.

JazzG Amy Lawrence made a similar point on Handbrake Off recently. Whilst I have had concerns about some aspects of this season, it's difficult to argue with how we're performing bigger picture.

Yeah I've grudgingly accepted (two seasons ago) that control ball is effective even if not attractive to me.

We're doing very, very well at the moment. To me that sharpens the case this is it for Arteta ... after three consecutive second place finishes, we need to win from here.

We're now 3-1 on with most of the bookies by the way.

We'll have to see how the players handle the pressure ratcheting up slowly, but most of them have been here and shown the necessary fortitude before.

MistaT it’s CL or League. If he only wins FA Cup and we put a good challenge in the big two he’s broken even and done the bare minimum. A league cup only won’t be enough.

the thread question question is different from me being a believer. there are no excuses to not win the league or champions league this year. he doesn't have to win both, one is fine with me and i personally rank the CL higher because it's an embarrassment looking at arsenal's european resume. we are the best team in europe, so if he is who i think he is then we're winning at least one of them.

edit: i'm voting for the first time: win or die. my vote made it an even 11 yes 11 no.

FA Cup/League Cup? I would see either of those as failures. The league is the one and only considering how long we've gone without and how close we've been. That is the target. Anything else is a bonus. Anything less (unless it's the champions league), is failure.

Yeah vote hasn't changed. Arteta has to win us the league this season. If he doesn't he can keep his job if we win the Champions League, otherwise let's see him off.

Yes, it would be strange to sack a manager who's doing so well, but it would also be weird not to sack a manager who contrives second place four seasons running despite being given every chance and resource. A sequence like that would point to some indefinable problem with his approach.
