Likewise, I wouldn't see it as cruel. For someone with no management experience, it was an incredible leap of faith from the board to appoint him in the first place. While his first two seasons yielded our worst premier league finishes for many years, the board again kept tremendous faith. His five years since has brought the club back into the Champions League positions but ultimately, he hasn't managed to translate that into any trophies.
The board can't rely on sentiment and they have to judge whether Arteta is still the best person to keep us at the current level or take us forward (and at what cost). If they determine that this is most likely the peak he can achieve for now and that there is sufficient cause to believe the club may finish 3rd or lower in the standings than we are to keep top two next season, then they would have justification for considering alternatives.
