Qwiss I feel like this ends up being the go to complaint regarding Arteta on match day. While it is not misplaced our anxiety while dealing with the favorites tag with a strong team chasing, our struggles in knock out competitions for most of the time under him, our preparation at times and then how our forward play is coached honestly is so concerning. Most of it is the difference between the very good and great managers.

He brought stability and structure. He did drag us up a level. I'll give him credit there.

You can't get this close so many times in a row before saying he's missing something. We're playing shit football and I'm ok with it if we win. We lost 5 games in 6 when the season is on the line. Blew up the league over 2 useless cups and got knocked out of them anyway. We're not winning the Champions League too.

His insistence on players and handbrake tactics is insanity. He'll sign another Chelsea reject and try to fix them, as if he's god. Fuck off man

Don't need to be cruel to him, but they'd really better move him on unless we win something very big. We've stagnated as a group. All the key players looked like they were experiencing groundhog day today.

Nor is it a penal colony or a torture dungeon. You'll note I didn't say don't sack him, having been capable of consistently maintaining sensible criteria for that outcome since during last season: major trophy in 25–26 or he should be sacked. Frankly it will be shatteringly cruel to Arteta if Arsenal moves him on regardless of anything else that goes with that for him.

Arteta has two fatal flaws: 1) lacks a season-long perceptive in squad management. Runs players to the ground and misses key rotation opportunities so there’s nothing the tank by March. 2) employs a cautious style against inferior opposition. If we played against Bournemouth, Liverpool, forest or wolves like we did today, we win all of those games handedly. I think the cautious setup dampens the squad’s confidence. If we’re playing not to lose against the bottom half, why would our players think we have a shot at silverware and delivering in the games that matter the most?

It’s frustrating because we had the quality to walk the league this year. I’m incredibly grateful for Arteta and the work he’s done to rebuild the culture of this club, but he’s not setting us up for success. I think of a manager like Ferguson- if he had our chips this year we would have won the league easily and probably one or two other trophies. Because he never had his teams play to not win.

Anyway, season isn't over so hold off with the "I told you so" act. Or if we must focus on what you told us, you told us we'd win the league just by signing Eze. Pretty sure you've said we'd win the league a number of times over the last couple of months also. "Just wait", wasn't it? Still games left, so we should be good then right? Afterall, you told us.

I can't think of a manager who has been given as much grace as Arteta at a big European club. If they sack him, and they wont, it wouldn't be cruel at all. It'd be incredibly fair.

Qwiss I think they might. They (belatedy) moved Wenger on, sacked Emery quickly when it got bad and if rumours are to be believed, were close to doing the same with Arteta at one point already.

We've got a big, tense, impatient and/or fed-up supporter base. If we end the season empty-handed, it's going to blow up into a noisy summer of Arteta Out and potentially key players considering moving on as they no longer believe they can win under Mikel.

Likewise, I wouldn't see it as cruel. For someone with no management experience, it was an incredible leap of faith from the board to appoint him in the first place. While his first two seasons yielded our worst premier league finishes for many years, the board again kept tremendous faith. His five years since has brought the club back into the Champions League positions but ultimately, he hasn't managed to translate that into any trophies.

The board can't rely on sentiment and they have to judge whether Arteta is still the best person to keep us at the current level or take us forward (and at what cost). If they determine that this is most likely the peak he can achieve for now and that there is sufficient cause to believe the club may finish 3rd or lower in the standings than we are to keep top two next season, then they would have justification for considering alternatives.

Cruelty is an external relation in the end. Arteta would be being pushed out after finishing second in the league four times running, humiliated yet again by his mentor turned rival, then Arsenal brings in another manager and the summer is all sound bites of Rice saying "Yeah, we've had a tough run and honestly I feel for Mikel, you can't not, but the new gaffer's got great ideas ..." ... tons of sheepish player interviews about how they were glad about the change ... I think he'll be shattered any which way if that's how it goes.

SimplyThePest If we fall short I don't think they are that brave, getting rid of Arteta they have to be responsible for choosing what's next and directly being accountable. I suspect they are too cowardly for that and play it safe probably with some stupid statement about being even more convinced that he's the correct person after the season etc. In which case they'll have learnt nothing from the Wenger end.

Regardless, I don't think they will sack him if we win nothing this season. I reckon, there will be lengthy discussions on what happened and what Arteta thinks is needed to push on next season. If he can't convince them to back him in the way he wants to meet those potential targets, I suspect he will walk away. I'm not even sure the board will judge him on the failure to win that harshly - I think a board decision will be based on whether they are told (or believe) that a big squad overhaul is needed which likely opens up the possibility of falling in the standings again in the short term.
