I really liked the football we played earlier in the season where we would suffocate teams to almost no chances whatsoever and we completely dominated them in their own half but we don't even do that anymore.

The football we play is a disgrace to this club and to the game of football in general. It's only barely acceptable if we win major trophies. Now that it's clear we're not winning anything, it's time to move on.

I agree with the prevailing conclusion (and have been in that camp since last year). Having said that, my primary reason is different. Honestly, I couldn't give a shit about the "brand" of football we play. We have no right as a club to play our own "brand" of football, being the serial losers that we have become over the last 20+ years. Every club in the world plays turgid, shitty football for the most part unless you are PSG playing in Ligue 1, where you can do whatever you want. It's just the zeitgeist and we roll with it. We watched Bayern play us in the CL and they weren't free flowing either. The memories of back-to-front football of the Invincibles in 2004 are just that - memories. I want us to win meaningful trophies and do whatever that takes. I know I am in the minority on here, but just wanted to put it out there.

The thing is Arteta is capable of getting us to play really good attacking football as we did a couple of seasons back. He’s also made us the strongest we’ve been defensively since George Graham’s time in charge. He needs to get the balance right.

The football is horrible to watch, but given that and the fact that we are still top of the league and going well in Europe with seemingly only upside to the way we play is a positive sign.

Anyways it’s getting to the stage where the fans won’t allow it to continue this way. Booing at full time yesterday…

We will in all likelihood end up conceding more goals than the Invincibles. Infact we haven't had a season under Arteta yet, where we have conceded less than the Invincibles. That's while playing extremely conservatively and slowly, and also having what is arguably not just the best back 5 in the League, but also in Europe.

tazmania some of us were saying all season that pushing so hard in the league cup was a stupid move but were shouted down and called arrogant for thinking we were too big for the league cup. If we'd won the league cup I don't think I'd feel any better today.

Qwiss I don’t think the league cup is particularly important on its own. But I think it fits in a larger construct where Arteta demands that his players want to win every time. Because once you take that idea away, it’s easy to throw in games. And it seeps to fans as well. The number of Chelsea fans I’ve seen this week wishing that their team lose to City today to spite us is staggering. I’ve seen United fans behave similarly and we remember Spurs fans laughing when City beat us - leading to them missing Europe and starting their trek towards the championship. Btw, we used to see people here regularly wishing the team could lose so we fire Wenger. It’s toxic.

So I don’t think it’s about prioritising the league cup. It’s about a culture of professionalism. It’s about players on the field always knowing they’re fighting for a place. That every minute an Arsenal player wears the red he needs to don himself, his teammates and the fans proud.

Qwiss exactly. I was one of those too. It's so obvious which makes it so much more frustrating. Arteta is either arrogant or dumb enough to think he can win everything with his squad after barely winning anything in the last several years

Qwiss every time I posted about rotation or full on resting the first 11 I was made fun of. Rice and Zubmendi have around 110 games played this season between them, while Noorgard had 56 minutes in the PL. all the while the so called genius manager talks about players needing to be able to play 70 games. Insane. He ruined White, Odegaard, Saka and Havertz, 2 of them for good and he has nothing to show for it.
Add the fact that he is arrogant, has no charisma, plays absolute dog shit football, plays favorites, overpays for players and of course never ever wins anything...the hold he has over this fan base needs to be studied by anyone that wants to be a cult leader or a politician. Makes 0 sense to me

Claudius I don't buy any of that. Wenger won league titles and FA cups all while using the league cup for the second string and promising youngsters. He even got to a final doing it. I think if your squad mentality is right then your second choice players tend to work harder to win those league cup matches as they've something to prove. And if you lose so be it, no cup is guaranteed anyway.

There are also 2 glaring issues with your theory. One are the FA cup line ups we put out around the same time. And the other is the elephant in the room, the utterly pathetic Kepa Arrizabalaga. Another shockingly inappropriate signing as the guy cannot play with the ball at his feet.

This is it for me. You should either go full second string and youngsters all the way through or full first 11 and go for it, not this hybrid lineup Arteta used. Make the commitment from the start and stick with it. It all seemed pointless to get to the final and play the strongest available team but then put Kepa in making it an impossible task.

However, we still had a 9 point lead when we got to the final so I'm not fully convinced of how much staying in it cost us up to that point. If we'd gone out earlier we wouldn't have had the final humiliation obviously. Putting Kepa in and getting battered that way in the final has certainly derailed the season however. There's no way there won't be mental scars next weekend.

City have had exactly the same approach. Unless we assume they were deprioritising the Champions League when they got their asses handed to them by Real Madrid 🤣

invisibleman18 I also think we've been playing poorly for a long time. People have tried to hand wave it away but that wolves game where we just salvaged the win with an own goal was a clear sign we weren't right.. We continued that way since then so for me it's not just emerged now we just got away with like in that moment.

yup that was my favorite. i wish to get back to the days of being upset that we allowed a shot on target. i love that style. our defense is so weak and pathetic now. the attack doesn't upset me as much because shitty attackers are going to do what comes natural to them: be shit.
