Probably the best thing we can do this summer is sign benzema and sign him early. That would make the kind of statement we need. He can work away at other things after

Ofcourse that won't happen though. He'll either faff about in the market and leave things late or a big sale will be the first action we'll see

Agreed, a player of Benzema's calibre and estimated cost would be a big statement of intent from Wenger and would help appease most fans and possibly win over some of the 'Wenger Out' section.

Problem is Benzema has come out again to say he doesn't want to leave Madrid. If he's happy sitting on the bench and playing sporadically then Real won't sell him.

He is, because he is lazy and has no ambition. If he had any he wouldn't have gone to Real in the first place.

Or we could blow all our money on a striker when we already have a better one, that's cool too. And then the same Benzema fansboys will start complaining about lack of depth in other areas around January.

I agree that if he has anything about him he has to leave. I just don't think he will.

His dopey look and racing stripes makes me think he's a lazy bastard playboy type of player. Don't really know for sure though.

Weird hair should be allowed only for winners, you hear Song!!!

or we'll breathe a big sigh of relief when that better one breaks down for his annual injury

Exactly. Benzema is not on Van Persies level and no we dont need a striker at all. There are 101 problems we need to solve before we think about depth upfront.

Benzema is not worth 30 million. Theres nothing he can do that Van Persie cant.

How can anyone possibly say we don't need a striker?

If Van Persie is out for a prolonged period (even two months) we don't have a single other central forward on whom you'd feel happy to rely.

That's not a situation you'd accept at centre half just because your fullbacks and deeper midfielders are part-time defenders, so why accept it at centre forward because Cesc, Nasri and Arshavin have been known to score a goal?

Chamakh can't kick and Bendtner's a dick. And both may or may not be here next season. The lack of concern about that from the fans is full testament to how paltry and indeed aggravating their contribution in the last six months has been.

Our best option would be Theo but he's completely untested in a central role over a prolonged period.

A gifted, productive striker who can play with or without Van Persie and score goals with his head and his feet (and his arse or elbow if need be) should be number one on our list.

We don't have enough finishers at the squad, and are constantly living in fear of the next Robin injury. Moreover, buying this guy sends a signal of seriousness, which might even be more important than his actual role next season.

On Sunday when Robin kept dropping back, we would have been better of with Benzema up front than Bendtner or Chamakh

Did we ever come to a consensus on John Cross - IDK or bull-shitter with the odd tie to Arsenal/Hill Wood?

He was definitely right about Joe Cole last summer, I can't remember which other big calls he's made.

I think it's pretty damn impossible to acquire Benzema unless the player himself wants a move.

If Real get Aguero, there's no way they'll turn down a respectable offer for Benzema.

does anyone think he's too similar to van persie? i keep wanting someone really pacy up top, but maybe walcott can start playing centrally on occasion, and i think it's a lot easier to find good attacking/wide mids than forwards.

I think it's quite likely we'll spend a lot more time playing with 2 forwards next season than we did last year - it may be our Plan A now to play with only one central forward, and it may remain our Plan A next season, but the way Wenger's spoken about it, and the way he's been so quick to give up on it in games in the last couple of months, suggests he's going to be giving serious thought to other options next season. And hey, Robin will probably get injured again anyway.

Either way, Hernandez and Rooney can fuck off - Benzema & RVP would be the best partnership around.

Some seem to think of Benzema as quick, others say he's slow - I've never really seen him burn anyone like some other strikers can. Seems a hard one to judge, never seems to run full-tilt, or maybe he just doesn't make those runs to show his speed off?

Cal, exactly how quick would you say he is?

Burn people? Trust me he can do that. He's fast off the mark. A few nice things about him
1) He's strong, so can really just go through defenders. This is one of my biggest criticisms about our team. We need a striker, and possibly a midfielder who can do that. Just use brute force to go through folks
2) He's pretty fast, gets of the mark pretty quickly, and can change direction very quickly
3) Good on both feet. Likes long range strikes in stride. Can do it with either foot (seriously, with very little adjustment. I emphasize this because few players do it). Again, we do not have enough players who run towards goal and just unleash a thunderous 18 yarder. He can strike the ball low and hard like Arshavin did when he first came here.
4) Is excellent hanging on the last defender. Great at making space with his muscular frame to get the through ball, turning with a burst of speed and running on goal to finish. Again, nobody really does this on our team
5) Is comfortable starting wide. I've seen him launch lots of attacks on the left, burn right backs and then cut in. Remember, he can curl it with his right from there
