Wide or central, speed in transition from defence to attack is what destabilises defence, though committing so many forward on quick breaks leaves you a bit more exposed if a counter-counter attack happens.

For some teams like those with weak defences it doesn't make sense but teams like Liverpool with van Dijk and us with Gab and Saliba it should be relatively low risk because the defenders are usually fatser and stronger than the opposition and don't necessarily need too much support.

The concerns for me about Sesko is that nothing in his career so far has shown him to be prolific or magical.

There are plenty of players like Havertz, Wirtz, Haaland etc. who are and were completely getting consistent league output in their position at that age. Considering Sesko is 22, he's getting similar league goal hauls to Wirtz and less league goals than Havertz who weren't even playing upfront at the very same age.

We're paying top dollar for a player who is all potential and expecting him to be the difference in the blunt attack or wasting another league season.

People don't understand how important this window is - We're at the cusp of testing the patience of players like Saka, Saliba and Rice who will start looking at their options if we don't win anything next season.

Saka in particular would be 24 turning 25 with 300+ appearances if he goes injury free and nothing but an FA cup to show for it. Exactly the same age and appearances like cesc when he finally lost patience in the project.

Yeh, I don't think Saka will necessarily leave, but Saliba? Rice? Odegaard? Gabriel (despite extending recently)? They'll be pushing for a move if Arsenal can't pick up titles, and then you're facing another rebuild with more players pushing for moves in subsequent windows. Endless iterations of the same flawed project.

It's quite poor to be in this situation and spend close to hundred million on a 21 year old who barely hit double digits in Bundesliga. It might work out but it's a lot more likely not to (which is something you could have said about most forward signings Arteta has made).

Another point that makes me sceptical about Sesko in the short term is that his physical level is poor. I don't know if it's because he's young, but he's getting his ass hauled off in most Bundesliga games after 60-70 minutes. That's probably not going to translate well to Premier League next season. It's a high risk, high gain signing at a time when the club should be making low risk, high gain signings. For the kind of money thrown around you expect the latter, not the former.

The comparisons you make are a bit odd. Havertz, Wirtz and Haaland were seen as generational talents at that age, nobody is saying that Sesko is a generational talent. I do concede the price of him is on the high side but that is due to market conditions, not many strikers available on the market.

I think titles are only half of the reason players will be looking for a move.

The other side of the coin is that Arteta, great as he’s been, will be wearing down some players with incessant coaching and rigid roles.

Saka, Rice, Saliba and Odegaard all have natural talent levels that will let them succeed in a “vibes” team. That may look mighty alluring soon and doubly so if it’s somewhere warm.

MistaT plenty of peps ex-players pretty much say they only tolerated him because of the potential for a trophy haul. they're emptied husks by the end. the potential for mikel to be a trophyless version of pep might wear on players patience, but we'll see. gabriel has committed. if saliba, rice and saka sign up for more, then it's clear there's still belief in the project

I said at the start of last season that no team had ever increased its points tally over 5 consecutive seasons in the PL and it turned out that we couldn't either. Similar, a core of players typically go through cycles of 2-4 years where they are able to challenge/win before falling off and then require a fresh new dimension to uplift the team.

It's less about the respective ages of the players and more about the difficulty in sustaining the effort required to win trophies over such a long period of time, notwithstanding the other changes like competitors catching up and methods becoming less effective. Saka, Saliba, Gabriel and Odegaard will be entering the 4th year of their cycle, and Rice his third. I don't think they have it in them to win without a significant uplift in midfield/attack.

If they were able to win without the major signings we require now, they would have won already over the past few years, and even if they had won, we'd still need to make the signings to keep the momentum going and keep the team afresh.

Athletic already pays him an obsene amount because of their player restrictions, so why not leverage that to get to the 350-400 range

What's bad about it

Ramsdale we sold for what we bought him for. His shot stopping and composure wasn't quite good enough.

Raya is still worth what we paid for him more if anything.

Turner I think we broke even on aswell.

The others are just insignificant back ups every club signs for emergency purposes.

If we bought kepa for 70 and sold him for 5 now that could get in the way of other signings.
