lorddulaarsenal one thing I will say is that you can feel generally positive about the club, whilst being a bit disappointed with some of the players we've targeted this window. 👋

But yeah some of the histrionics are a bit much.

Don Pacifico but why would you even be disappointed?

Personally, Gyokeres is a preference, based solely on what I see is player that's ready now, uber motivated and decently priced for that quality of player. If we had gone the Sesko route, I'd have been skeptical, but still optimistic and excited to see what he could do, and why the club rates (had rated) him so highly.

And the Noni hate is also a weird one for a luxury back up for Saka/potential challenger to Martinelli if that's part of Arteta's plans. This is a player who is young (has that resale value some folks think is so important, I don't), has top level premier league and European football experience, brings good dribbling ability, speed and shot creating actions. All things which we need.

We signed Zubimendi. Best in class. To replace the rapist no less.

We are negotiating with Eze, one of the most creative and entertaining players in the league.

Norgaard. Solid depth, looks a top human being as well. Raises the floor.

Why are we disappointed? I'm really confused. What do people really want?

flobaba I think Gyokeres and Madueke are a bit dull in all honesty.

Trigger warning: I'm being hyperbolic to make a point but if there were a spectrum spanning 'graft' and 'flair' (I know the two things aren't mutually exclusive but hopefully you'll get my point), both players would sit on the 'graft' end of the spectrum; willing to stick to a system and keep running all game, succeeding through repetition rather than invention.

I've said before that I think some of the criticism of the way we play is OTT but truthfully, that was contingent on the expectations I had about the attackers we'd eventually sign.

If we sign Eze, I'd love the flair/chaos he would bring to our side.

The other part of it, is what I've said below.

Don Pacifico One thing I can't shake about the last couple of weeks is that the players we're signing/heavily linked to don't feel like 'empire building' signings. Appreciate the urgency around wanting/needing to win now but with such a massive outlay this summer, I do wonder how this will impact future windows. Norgaard, Gyokeres, Kepa and Eze - in isolation, these can be made to make sense but collectively, the age profile suggests we'll need sizeable investment in the not too distant future to replace them.

I guess it's not just age profile either - call it a vibe but as good as some of these guys are, I do wonder how threatened our rivals are by them. The one top tier signing we've made is Zubimendi who I have high hopes for in terms of his impact on our transitions (which should act as a multiplier for the rest of the team) but the other signings are a mix of pragmatic or distinctly 'pretender' tier.

I get we've got a decent base to work off of already, just a bit underwhelmed overall (although can't fault the intent to fill our squad gaps, more the execution). Maybe all an overreaction on my part of the shock of £50m being sunk on Madueke... 🤷🏻‍♂️

flobaba still need a starting LWF at the level of Saka. That's my concern so far anyway.

Rodrygo may come, but I'm not sure he's even at Saka's level. A bit better as a footballer than Martinelli but without the dawg as the kids say.

I certainly wouldn't expect a Sanchez or Ozil level impact from him if he joins.

I'd say that if you're in contract negotiations and part of what they offer you is their word on something that they don't want to put on writing, you treat their offer as if it doesn't include what they don't want to write down. If they say they'll let you go for 60m but that they don't want to give you a 60m release clause, you treat their offer as if they don't offer you anything in regards to a potential transfer.

QuincyAbeyie If the club promised me something I would hold them to that promise to put pressure on them, and I think that's all there is to it. The rest is just artificial stuff. Negotiations happen between you and the leading people who work at the club, and they know perfectly well what was said and what wasn't said. Writing is only useful as proof in a court, and no one goes to court because it takes too long to get it settled.

Eiher way, Sporting has a long history of acting like this. Seems like a downright scummy club:

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert I mean, Saka's one of the best players in the world - there's no gurantee that anyone coming in is at that level. It's perfectly possible to get a Diaz/Gakpo level performer on the other wing and be successful.

Even more of a reason to treat their word as bullshit if they don't want to put it in writing.

I don't buy at all that it doesn't matter if it's written or not even if there are vague examples like Suarez. It's much easier for the club to go back on their word when it's just a conversation they've had than if they've signed a clause.

This is just what clubs do, we would so the same is brinkmanship let's see if we end to having to budge. I agree though if it's not written down it's not worth anything

awooga83 we actually dont when selling players. If anything we sell our players for much lower fees than the likes of Chelsea Liverpool Spurs and City
