One thing I can't shake about the last couple of weeks is that the players we're signing/heavily linked to don't feel like 'empire building' signings. Appreciate the urgency around wanting/needing to win now but with such a massive outlay this summer, I do wonder how this will impact future windows. Norgaard, Gyokeres, Kepa and Eze - in isolation, these can be made to make sense but collectively, the age profile suggests we'll need sizeable investment in the not too distant future to replace them.
I guess it's not just age profile either - call it a vibe but as good as some of these guys are, I do wonder how threatened our rivals are by them. The one top tier signing we've made is Zubimendi who I have high hopes for in terms of his impact on our transitions (which should act as a multiplier for the rest of the team) but the other signings are a mix of pragmatic or distinctly 'pretender' tier.
I get we've got a decent base to work off of already, just a bit underwhelmed overall (although can't fault the intent to fill our squad gaps, more the execution). Maybe all an overreaction on my part of the shock of £50m being sunk on Madueke... 🤷🏻♂️
