I've read multiple conflicting reports on Rodrygo this morning. Seems like some believe that Rodrygo still wants to stay at Madrid and fight for his place despite not playing much at the CWC and will only leave if Madrid tells him he is not in their plans. The other reports have said that Real is open to him leaving and the call is up to him on whether he leaves or not. It seems like no one really knows what will happen there and I'm guessing that Berta/Arteta are well informed. With this in mind, it does make sense that they are moving on the other options we've had in Madueke and Eze since we don't want Rodrygo to be our Nico Williams of this window and then have to scramble at the end of the window. Clearly these deals are hard to get over the line in a limited time frame so I'm fine with them getting players in now so they can have a full preseason and hit the ground running.

My HOPE is that we can still do these deals for Gyokeres, Eze and Madueke and remain in the conversation for Rodrygo IF he does decide to leave Madrid. My hunch is that we will need to sell a few players (Trossard, Zinchenko, Nelson, Vieira, Lokonga) in order to also buy Rodrygo so I bet we see movement there after we push for signings this week.

samthegooner Or we could not sign Madueke and have enough for Rodrygo if/when he decides to leave. Seems straight forward to me. Madueke isn't going to move the needle and isn't going anywhere. If we miss out on Rodrygo and need to fall back on Madueke, Chelsea will gladly still sell to us because NO ONE else is paying £50m for him.

samthegooner I think Rodrygo is gonna drag on all summer, I don't think it will happen quickly so it is sensible to get other deals done before hand because that will be more complicated. It sounds like the player is conflicted about leaving which is understandable but he has to decide what he wants for his career.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert I'm also not completely sold on Rodrygo and I'm definitely not sold on Madueke as primarily a LW signing. However, if we go into the season with Martinelli, Eze and Madueke as LW options, I think that is a huge improvement over what we've had recently and I like the variety of profiles there. Add in a Rodrygo and we are spoiled for choice across the frontline with a lot of versatile players and profiles. That is the direction I am really hoping we go in.

Sicario2 I'd imagine there is a ton of stuff that goes into making an official bid for a player when you are talking about an outlay of £70-80m. Contract deals, add on stipulations, etc would all have to go through lawyers and accountants before you can formalise the spend. At the end of the day football clubs are big corporations and these are massive business deals, its always going to be slow.

Sicario2 Yes. €5 million is not the kind of sum a transfer breaks down over. It's not even the money itself, it's a disagreement about how much of it that should be up front and how much will be tied into add-ons. I think Arsenal are worried that if they cave in then Sporting will ask for another five million up front, and if you can pay that, then why not front the whole sum?

Sporting's president has burned all bridges wth Gyökeres, and the lad has already turned down big money offers elsewhere, so there's nothing left for them but to make this deal. It was always about squeezing as many millions as they could out of it. They are already negotiating with Almeria for his replacement.

Qwiss they probably have to consider the budget allocated to contract renewals etc as well, probably up to 2-3 years in advance.

Sicario2 Even if we started negotiating for Watkins today he wouldn't be ready for preseason. Villa haven't had time to get a replacement, we'd have to trash out an entire deal in a few days, etc. The fee would reflect this and making it very unattractive business. And that's just the logistics: it's ignoring how much worse and older Watkins is.

Gyökeres is the one we've decided on, and I think we was Berta's main choice all along. We just weren't sure early on how much hardball Sporting would play.

There are also rumors out there that the bid for Madueke was leaked by Chelsea and the fee is much closer to 25m than 50m, with anything additional being bonuses/incentives. I wouldn't be surprised by that and it also goes to show that everyone (myself included in a big way) needs to stop overreacting to these minute by minute reports since a lot of them are club/agent PR that is intentionally placed for negotiations. Whenever I read any report these days that mention that we don't have enough budget for something or will need to sell to buy, I'm reminding myself that it is likely Berta trying to lower fees for targets by playing poor.

LeGrove has had some reliable info in the past but wouldn't put him down as being Tier 1 or anything

JazzG Interesting - I actually didn't see his post but had seen some others on Twitter/BlueSky claiming similar numbers, although nothing super reputable or anything. I do know that Fabrizio is very tied in with Chelsea so anything he's reporting on it is definitely going to be through their lens.

A bid in that range would be more in keeping with what we've seen from Berta so far in the Norgaard and Kepa deals, as well as the negotiations for Sesko and Gyokeres.

samthegooner I think he'd probably report interest to make stories up but when you actually give specific numbers and say a bid has been made it could tarnish his credibility, I suppose that depends on how much Chelsea pay him lol.

the more i think about Madueke, a player of his profile makes sense for us because with MLS inverting and a right footed left 8, martinelli has been hugging the touchline on his weaker foot and not being all that effective. an actual left footed left winger makes sense.
