Claudius he does score a lot of goals in open play / counter situations, and also being open in the box. Additionally, he is just much bigger, stronger, faster than his typical Portuguese opponent. I heard recently that Porto/Sporting pay £35m in wages while their typical opponent pays £5m. To put into perspective, the top teams in Championship pay £35m and the bottom teams pay £10m. If we assume some efficiency in the market, then Gyokeres is effectively playing against Championship level opponents for the most part.

But even then, his strength, speed, finishing are all worth a look. He is probably worth 15+ goals, but I don’t expect him to drop 30 in the league.

Seb is a bit of a knob really but he has a decent eye for talent.

I don’t see him outskilling premier league defenders and constantly outmuscling VVD and Konate. But we have enough that is useful for our needs

This makes sense but it's not the way we play. We also don't counter-attack like we have done historically, which feels a conscious move to minimise errors etc.

You may be right that we're waiting for the right target man to deploy a more varied approach and if we sign Gyokeres, I hope that is indeed the case (even if we don't, I think it would be beneficial!).

Don Pacifico yeah. I think we need to launch it. The consequence of teams like us playing out the back so well is that defenses have crept up the pitch and presses have become better. A lot of the midtable teams can press us quite effectively nowadays versus 2 or 3 years ago. So the next step is being able to hit long balls to our strikers more frequently with greater accuracy. Opponents will find themselves understaffed in defense and open to exploitation.

When was the last time we have more than one player playing at a world class level upfront for an extended period of time? first half of 22/23? maybe you could argue midway through last season, but not for me... we played some brilliant attacking football until Jesus got injured and were slicing through teams.. Martinelli was cooking back then also... That's why I would much prefer quality over quantity this summer... I'd happily sacrifice an just take a punt on a young winger if it meant we brought Isak in, or the other way round..

Striker market is shit so it may force our hand which is fair enough but we should be aiming higher than Gyokeres

Claudius I don't think we have the luxury of spending that kind of money on someone and getting it wrong.

When teams play against us, they'll be deep and players will have little time or space to play with. If you aren't up to it you'll get eaten alive. That is what happened with Lacazette and I get the same vibes with this guy. Laca left us looking like a finished bum and scored 27 league goals the next in France.

MistaT Gyokeres. Nunez would arrive with such a brand deficit here. He'd need to hit 20 goals in his first season to ever be accepted. I think there is a lot of potential there, but we live in an impatient age.

CPM he wouldn't be near the top of my list He'll cost a lot, his wage would be massive, he is older than Martinelli and doesn't score more than him despite playing for Real Madrid. He's a good player but he's not a game changer just because he's worn that white jersey for a few years.

Qwiss If you had asked me a month ago, I would've been all over this but I thought he was a passenger in our two games and did not look like he could handle physicality whatsoever. I'd rather have Nico Williams or Antoine Semenyo personally - two guys that can handle the pace and physicality of the EPL game and are also used to taking on the creative burden as opposed to being a cog in a galactico squad.

Qwiss earlier this season, Bellingham described Rodrygo as Madrid’s most talented player - ahead of Vinny and Mbappe. He is a very gifted player who has to play on the right to accommodate those two players. But his goal contributions are much higher when he’s on the left.

He has 11 goals and 7 assists in all comps versus 9/8 for Kvara, 10/7 for Nico and 9/5 for Martinelli. This despite playing out of position. Recall how putting Raphinha in the right position turned him from good to great. I think it’s an opportunity to quickly lift a player

samthegooner this doesn't seem logical. If you watch two games where Nico is a passenger, will you change your mind from all over it to not wanting him? I thought Mbappe and Vinicius and Bellingham were bad against us as well, but I would've taken all three of them.

As I say he's not a bad player but he's not a game changer. He's 24 and never had a big scoring season. At least with someone like Williams he's younger and has more scope to improve. Plus I just like him and think he's ready to step up. Feel about him how I felt about Isak when we pathetically went for Jesus instead.

Also I checked the stats of the 4 we are talking about and Martinelli has the best league goals per 90 of the lot. And he's playing in the strongest league of the lot. He'll be a lot harder to upgrade on than people think.

Something I’ve said many times. Martinelli is far better than people give him credit for relative to the alternatives. The goal should not be to replace, but to augment. Which is also why I’m not particularly stuck on a specific player. Any high performer like Williams or Rodrygo would be welcome.

Qwiss Rodrygo may not be the right fit for Arteta and the PL, but he's one of the best attacking technicians in the world. This season's Madrid are a poorly organized outfit, but don't get it twisted, Rodrygo is a Saka-level talent and has more technical quality in his big toe than Martinelli has in two feet. At a certain point we need to prioritize creativity and technical quality, we can't just have a bunch of pressing runners up front.
