Claudius nah its not churn. That disconnect is completely self inflicted. We looked like a team for a while when Partey went back into midfield. Artetas obsession with squezzing him in at right back even though he had White, Kiwi, Zinchenko, etc on the bench totally fucked up our structure right from the off. Merino might come good eventually but right now he offers very little, Rice is asked to control midfield and its not his strength and Trossard is a forward and a finisher not a build up player.

Qwiss I'm sure we'll go on a decent run during the CL break. we'll hit some kind of bottom before Christmas, and then play decent again Jan through march. end the season with not much to show for it again.

the merino and sterling buys aren't moving the needle, and calafioris transfer should have been vetoed on the grounds of stop blowing the fucking budget on defenders and crying about PSR after the fact. tbh I'm not sure what artetas plan for our best 11 was when he bought merino. he creates selection headaches with rice and partey.

DiabyKungFu its going to take Ode time to be able to carry us again. He'll be asked to do too much straight away and when we take him off it'll be for Merino or someone and that'll unbalance us again. And that as you say is damning of the summer business.

If Arteta hadn’t bought Merino, and Partey had remained unfit, the fans would be killing Arteta for not having strengthened midfield.

SimplyThePest it works fine when all your best attackers are fit, they cover the inbalance but with Odegaard out and Artetas cowardice in using Nwaneri we just have so little going forward. If Saka has an off day, or the opposition tactically cut him off then we struggle.

Qwiss I’ve said in previous seasons at our best we’re a finely balanced machine relying on a lot of compromises in order for it to work. That was mainly in relation to Zinchenko, but even with him in a bit part role the same holds true. A well balanced team and squad should be able to manage the absences of key players. It will never be the same level, but there should be a plan of how to cover, whether that’s by going like for like and muddling through or adapting the system to do something a bit different. We’re stuck in a weird no-man’s land paradox of doing both and neither at the same time.

tazmania this is another thing that struck me during the match. This is supposed to be a team where we forego a bit of creativity because we've focussed on "duel monsters". Yet when we come up against a big physical side like Newcastle we fall apart.

tazmania so last season we consistently looked tougher, faster than opponents. First to balls, strong in swirls and ground duels. All that physicality is gone. We just look completely unfit, unable to press and be combative. It struck me in first half that we were completely outhustled by these guys.

Gurgen this. I hate how comfortable we are slipping into the defensive structure, in games where, in my opinion we should be harassing and pressing hard. Newcastle barely offered a threat yet there we were, 11 behind the ball. Maintaining shape.
