Terrible result and has echoes of the last few seasons where we've dropped points against opposition we shouldn't. We don't look like a great title winning side with the way we set up everything trying to not lose and the attacking aspect feels less worked through. It leaves games so marginal and we often look more exposed against lesser teams because we try to win those games with the odd goal and bad luck or lack of quality hurts us.

Right now I don't feel this is a team that can take the step required to win the league and I think the limitation is from a managerial/coaching perspective more then anything.

I actually thought we played well. We have our issues at the moment but you can see that when everyone’s fit and firing we’ll be top drawer.

Tough decisions always seem to go against us.

I’m 50/50 on the decision, I can understand why it was given but I’m sure you can find examples of a red card not given as it’s on the half way line and we have White covering. Saliba will learn from this.

We missed Saka, he’s our most important player. Martinelli has to score, just our luck they then score a few mins later. Tough day but need to bounce back. We had a lot of players missing today so need them back urgently

I'm Saliba's biggest fan but what he did was dumb. Give your goalkeeper a chance to make a save. Even if you concede, you'll still likely win the game.

At this point, it's undeniable that Arteta prioritises defensive stability to the detriment of the attack. It 'worked' last year in that we eventually found some attacking form but this year it's going to see us fall well off the pace by the time we repeat that, if we do at all.

It's all a bit Dave Moyes at current.

SimplyThePest Always thought it's quite incredible people denies that outrightly. It's so obvious conservatism is his greatest trait.

SimplyThePest I don't think Artetas conservatism is necessarily a big tactical failing. It's that he prioritises the defensive positions in recruitment. You can see it with Timber and Calafiori signings. Both class players but if you tactically focus on defence then you need exceptional players like Saka and Ode to make up for it. As good as Trossard is and as dangerous as Sterling can be neither can carry that load. Nor can Kai, he's great in the system but he's a player who boosts Saka and Ode as well as benefitting from them. We have 2 world class players in this squad. Salibas on his way, maybe Cala too. But without our 2 talisman the rest are shown up a bit.

Clrnc was that in question? Our transfer activity, the way the priority of the team is defensive effort and it's why we aren't great in transition because the direction seems to be on not taking risks that could result in a loss of possession so we are quite slow getting up the pitch and even Saka referenced he's not able to be as free attacking because that's how we play under Arteta. It's because we have an outstanding player like Saka we can still show some quality attacking aspects.
