If Arteta thinks there's something to get out of Sterling, then I'd back that, but even I can't pretend that signing him wouldn't feel terribly underwhelming. He certainly doesn't feel like the difference maker we were looking for post Bayern. Though if he could be trusted to take some of the load off Saka in a way Nelson isn't, that at least would be positive.

That's how I'm viewing it. It affords Saka some rest time and gives us more options on the bench. But wouldn't want to countenance a permanent signing on anything but significantly reduced terms, which I'm not sure Sterling would be up for. Stock has fallen dramatically since he joined Chelsea though...

Pepe LeFrits I'd take a punt at him, but maybe they'd rather do a Sterling loan than risk getting stuck with Sancho if they're not that keen.

Pepe LeFrits depends what they're both asking for. Length of contract, etc No fee and 2-3 years of Sterling is a lower risk than £25m plus 4-5 years of Sancho. Plus there are questions about Sanchos professionalism and effort where as Arteta knows Sterling very well.

Pepe LeFrits I'd say it's six of one half a dozen of the other. sancho may have higher upside but carries more risk. he seems to have some attitude and workrate issues that may not be the right cultural fit.

Sterling? Surely we've moved on from waiting around the back of Chelsea's training ground to go through their bins haven't we? Surely he couldn't be worse than Willian, but I thought he couldn't be worse than Luiz...
Jorghino has at least been useful I guess.

It looks like it will be 2 more keepers and nothing else. Huge mistake but what can you do.

HomeSteak yes and no. We should have brought another attacker in but looks like we've decided Sterling was too expensive and/or motivated more by money than any lingering ambition, which I can't disagree with if that's their logic.

Don Pacifico A new winger or a striker should have been here a month ago. It's a fuck up in my opinion. One injury to either Saka or Odegard and the title fight is over before it begins.

I think that's a little melodramatic but I agree we should have had a better contingency plan for our attack. Definitely looks like the one that got away this window because of our misplaced focus on Sesko and Williams.

Think Sterling is a little underrated on here. Not ideal for age/motivational issues, but in terms of a player who's still semi-delivering (8 goals, 4 assists in 22 starts), and knows what it takes to play in our sort of system, he pisses all over Sancho. I think he'd be better than nothing too if we could get him on loan/a low wage.

goon he's also stylistically the sort of winger we need even if he's possibly past his best. I can't judge him on his Chelsea for either because we've seen what a difference it made to Havertz getting him out of there. His wages are the only thing that gives me pause with him. I'd bite your arm off for a loan before deadline given how the window has gone TBH.

goon Yep, he's been as productive as Jesus/Martinelli/Trossard last season and leagues above Nelson. It's not really a question of quality - he does represent an improvement to the squad. The only issue is that a transfer is financially not viable and would be a sunk cost given that he's 29 years old. A loan is more reasonable.

goon Nah, Sancho is a far better player as things stand. The way he tore all the teams apart last year in the UCL was unreal. Not sure why we are not in for him instead of Sterling since both of them earn around the same.

If Chelsea get the Dortmund's version of Sancho, no matter how shit they are they will probably finish top 4 just on pure firepower.

Qwiss havertz wasn't showing the bad attitude sterling was when he was at Chelsea though. Age, character big red flags for this guy in my view.

Sterling would be a terrible signing. Given Arteta has been about the non negotiables then you can't bring in a player with the attitude he has displayed. He's also never been a technically good player and always relied on pace which is going. That would be a horrible acquisition and would look to me as total desperation. I don't think there is more to come from him either because of his age and his technical quality is well known.

awooga83 what attitude? I've never heard anything about Sterling having a bad attitude beyond the tabloids whining that he spent money stuff.

Qwiss last season at Chelsea he displayed a terrible attitude in games arguing with teammates. Against us Cole Palmer was the designated penalty taker but after getting a penalty Palmer picked the ball up sterling went over and snatched it out of his hands and ended up in an argument which Enzo had to get involved with so eventually Palmer took the penalty. He did the same again in the Fa cup tie but ended up getting the pen and then missed it. To me that's not a great team player more interested in himself then what is good for the outcome of the game. He did that a few occasions as well calling rank on other players in moments.
