QuincyAbeyie I wondered why he didn’t look at Arsenal or Liverpool. They made a lot more sense from a fit perspective than Real. Of course, for a guy at 25 who’s wasted too many years at PSG, Real Madrid will always be more alluring. But it felt like a transfer driven more by ego and concepts of the ideal than reason.

It would be hard to argue against that. The problem is Mbappe keeps missing chances, rather than the team being unable to attack. He keeps missing like Martinelli.

This is a bit like Wenger's and even my dream at the time to partner Henry with Anelka. Sounds incredible, but they offer similar qualities and you need players who complement each other, rather than offering the same skills which is the problem with Vini and Mbappe.

The other surprise is Barca who just replaced Gundogan with Olmo and let a whole lot of misfits go, promote one whole bunch of youngsters and suddenly look like the best team in Europe when they were terribly inconsistent under Xavi last year.

Football is funny. Sometimes just the right manager itself can bring the club up several levels without needing to splurge and splurge to replace an entire squad
