Which is the wrong lens to view Merino in. We don’t need any more professionalism or pragmatic players, we need the kind of talent that surrounded Arteta during his time here.

I kinda like him and actually rate his talent but I have no idea what the fuck he adds to our general play and he should only be used as an emergency 9 or in specific, weird game states.

He's not being used right, in my opinion. He should never be the last midfielder back at any time because he isn't as press resistant against the top level teams/traps. He is technically good enough for a one touch pass it off and move type situation, which is what he does for the Spanish national team.

He's a great squad option, but Arteta relies on him as a first teamer because he suits control ball ethos (press, physical, aerial prowess, duel winner).

He is fine to rotate with Rice, might even prefer him at times... just don't play them together.. please don't... ever.

He’s been indifferent when he starts but think he could be a weapon off the bench for us. You want him on the end of passes or crosses in the box rather than in midfield. Saying that he is switched on off the ball but with the ball he hasn’t really got going.

It's the same ol Mik Mo.
Spain uses him differently, and harness his qualities in and around the box better than (or different to what) we do. Notice how many of his touches are one twos and quick layoffs to a readily available short pass option, rather than him having to dally on the ball, seeking an open pass, or dribble through the press closer to his own goal. And of course the quality of opposition and amount of space he's seeing at national team level is a factor

Yeah, it's the factor. I see a lot to admire in Merino but we already had months with him playing at 9 in the league, and I don't want any more of those months. Pray for Kai 🙏
