If you want to see the biases of the British football press just look at the response to Fernandes red vs Trossards. Almost universal criticism of the Bruno red and a chorus of "letter of the law" on Trossard. You can make a case for Fernandes but its not the egregious red people are now claiming. He slips but he still deliberately kicks out as he's going down and not in control. He doesn't need to kick as he slips. Instead of pulling out of the challenge has he should have he throws his leg across him dangerously. When its the other way around people say "oh it always looks bad in slow mo, watch it in real time" well do it for this challenge. Its only luck he hasn't really hurt Maddison there.
Now you don't have to send him off for it. You can give him the benefit of the doubt because he slipped but why should he get it and not Trossard? And now you have the media howling that this was a hugely egregious red. And worst of all it then gets parroted by too many of the unthinking public who were all repeating "letter of law, letter of the law" last week.
