Of course they aren't. But neither are we beyond having another tough period or continuing our tough period. Nobody is saying it's impossible except maybe Sicario, but 9 points is tough because now we need both Liverpool to have a tough period and us to not have one (or Liverpool to have a longer tough period, or several tough periods - you get the point).
It's not really basing analysis on recent form, but it's that the probability of us winning is [outcome 1 needed to win] * [outcome 2 needed to win] etc. and because of the 9 points difference the number of favourable outcomes needed to win has increased, making the probability go down by quite a bit.
