Tomiyasu is a good player but overrated by Arsenal fans, not sure why. Maybe it's because he looks 'brave' in duels.

Are we talking about offensively or defensively.? What is our basis for comparing players that are so different they may as well be playing different positions?

flobaba different players are compared all the time. For example in the best player of the tournament award in the Euros, man of the match award every game, Ballon Dor every year etc.

In the case I responded to, the basis was "starting quality".

QuincyAbeyie 'starting quality' is subjective and depends on the tactical approach(es) we would deploy from game to game, (or in different phases of the same game), and which player has the best combination of attributes that can be leveraged to give us the best chance of winning on the day.

In any case, having more "starting quality" players than there are starting positions is a good thing. We essentially lost a title because one CB injury meant it was impossible to beat the bottom team at home. Very simplistic view perhaps but not entirely wrong.

This deal is probably stuck in the chicken and egg limbo of us need to sell off Kiwior before we get him and and needing to get him before we can sell off Kiwior.

Personally I’d trust Kiwior to offer us more this year (between availability and his level of talent) versus Tomiyasu (higher talent, but a full crock).

Regardless, the left back position seems a conundrum with an untested Timber, a crock in Tomi, Zinny with his warts, and a readily available mediocre Kiwior.

Just need to bring back Tierney to fully embrace the chaos.

I think Kiwior got a bit shown up in certain games towards the end of the season. Defensively got done badly against Bayern and looked shaky after that.

Clear that Arteta wants defensively sound player there who is also left footed and can play, Calafiori seems to fit that description.

Agree with that. Timber is a level or two up on the ball.

Tomiyasu has his limitations but from a playing perspective he’s good for a squad role. Fitness is the issue there

Only worry about Timber, aside from his returning fron injury, is that he seems ill disciplined when it comes to positional play when inverting. His only appearance at the end of the last season, whilst showing he is very comfortable on the ball, left me wondering why he was running ahead of the ball and almost into the box when his role should be to support, provide extra numbers and break the lines either with his passing or on the ball. Not running ahead of the ball and midfielders and into the box. But it was his only appearance of the season aside from that first start so maybe something that happened due to an eagerness to make something happen and be a hero against Everton or whoever we were playing on the last day.

Yeah I get that. It’s a worry and risk if we move away from the defensive blueprint that we have used from Christmas. I love the four giants approach

Fyn time Frankie needs some Saka and Martinelli tbh but yeah, would be entertaining, at the very least for the neutrals. Goales galore at both ends.

From what I have read, it looks like all the recent negotiations have been between Basel and Bologna. That would seem to indicate to me that there is at least a loose agreement on the structure of the deal between Arsenal and Bologna and now Bologna is trying to see if they can squeeze out some additional profit by reducing the sell clause with Basel. I remember hearing that Calafiori was also on holiday following the Euros for a couple of weeks (I believe in the Maldives or Seychelles - one of those island chains) and that he wouldn't be able to finalize a move until later in July. Not sure if that is true or not but I remember flagging it when this transfer first started to move quickly.

i always love those stories about how nothing can happen when people are on holiday, as if people stop looking at their phone/internet when they are away. if i stood to potentially make millions of dollars and make a life altering decision, id make sure my agent was calling me no matter what day/time it was and no matter what continent i was on

mdgoonah41 that's just our American mindset. These Europeans, especially on the continent, take their vacations hilariously seriously.

Definitely valid but in fairness, it's probably hard to arrange a medical in the Maldives/Seychelles. If he knows where he wants to go and is confident the deal will get signed when he's back, why not spend a little extra time with R&R.

samthegooner exactly and if everything is already agreed between all parties it doesn't really require him to come back early.
