Burnwinter we may loss progressive passing when Zinchenko is on the bench, but this guy will allow us to mix it up with his carrying. We don’t have enough players who have the power and skill to run 20 yards with the ball and disorganise the opponent. With this guy and timber, we suddenly have that running.

There seem to be some concerns about Calafiori's durability and athleticism, but those are also Zinchenko's weakest suits. Kiwior is an elite physical specimen and an asset to the squad, but he's no "pictures" player. Come on in, Riccardo.

Don't think we lost anything at all without Zinchenko playing last season. If any, it was net gain and improved team performance

Clrnc he wasn't a gamechanger in the way that Rice, Saka, etc are, but was still a value-adding member of the squad. It's easy to understand why Arteta has been committed to him given the options we've had. I think Cala is the piece that makes Zinchenko less necessary.

Good stuff. Remember listening to an Athletic podcast on Motta and Bologna earlier this year and the they spent a fair chunk of it speaking about Calafiori. I remembered the name and then when I saw Italy at the Euros I understood why they were impressed.

He only wanted us if reports are to be believed and the price is fair. Happy with this.

This signing is thrilling. It’s a sign of where we are in squad building. We are adding really quality in a big boy manner now. Improving what is already arguably the best defence in Europe.

This guy is a top player, brings something new to the squad and he’s a heartbreak kid.

Even though our defensive record was good there is plenty of room for improvement. We conceded 29 goals last year, that isn't something to shout about. We ideally need that to be in the low 20s next season.

Left side of defence was clearly an issue last season. Zinchenko, Kiwior & Tomi all played there for us and I think it is fair to say none of those solutions were ideally. We have Timber fit this season but what Arteta's plans for him aren't clear yet.

JazzG So glad to see Arteta put these stats monkeys in their place. They should speak when spoken to. Nothing beats a man with a style and an attitude, and an eye for players who fit his system. And we clearly need left-sided help across the board.

Our last five big transfers: Rice, Havertz, Timber, Raya, Calafiori. That is an immense record.

CPM Both approaches need to go hand in hand, Arteta should get the final say and have the strongest say in the room but it’s healthy for there to be a debate rather just backing everything he says.

We had the best defensive record and 2nd best attacking so there could be arguments we don’t need to improve much but we all know that isn’t the case!

Don Pacifico I think Brentford were asking for a lot more earlier in the summer, think that may have put off clubs like Spurs but we did well to get them to agree to loan and compulsory buy clause. A lot of clubs won’t entertain that but we couldn’t make the deal work without that

CPM actually getting a great two way defender is a great use of data. It’s a no brainer to add a player like this to the team before anything else.
