When fans talk about value it's not about making the owners a profit or anything like that though, which it would typically be in a "real business".

For fans, value would mean doing what maximizes the chance of winning. And yeah, keeping Ramsdale could provide better value than loaning him out.

Their minds were completely blown by the idea that a popular goalie can be replaced. It might be healthy for him to be away from that.

Because it was an obvious distortion, a fig leaf for a bit of business with a significant downside: in the form of a talented £30m keeper we've laid to waste and now can't get a move for.

well, I think you could say that Arteta presented an illusion that there was going to be a genuine competition for the position - to be fair, we don't know that there hasn't been on the training ground - but given the speed with which Raya claimed and has held onto the position, it's clear that Raya was always going to be his man.

RocktheCasbah again, i always bring up this point of what we don’t see. These players do about 4 or 5x as many hours on the field with Mikel away from us. And apparently it’s serious. I was listening to a podcast this weekend where apparently Partey is said to be the most competitive player in practice according to Odegaard and others. Tackles hard, fights for every ball. I never would’ve guessed that. I would’ve said Gabriel or Jesus. And maybe that’s why he’s played so much since he got healthy in March.
I’m just saying, there’s so much we are not privy to, and tons of relevant input away from the actual matchdays.

Yea, he just wanted to improve on Ramsdale, and he did. And as much as I like Ramsdale, it was the right call. I would say the minute that goal went in vs Sotton, where Ramsdale was looking at the bird in his goal and not the ball lol, he was done. The kid said it himself, he cannot stay focused for 90 minutes.

Claudius I totally agree with you. I was just agreeing with Qwiss that Arteta, unwittingly I'm sure, helped created that toxic environment around the goalkeeping position last summer.

Everyone accepts now, I think, that Raya was and is an upgrade on Ramsdale - but I don't think Arteta got to that decision from behind closed doors, so to speak. I don't think Raya would be at the club if Arteta hadn't already seen him as that upgrade, but maybe he felt he couldn't be honest about it as long as Ramsdale remained at the club. Whatever it was, I don't think it was helpful.

Sicario2 - Tier 1 do you think we need a superstar starter in attack, or any good attacker would actually just be fine to give us more bodies. Ie do we absolutely need a Kara, Williams level player? Or can we get someone who is a proven 10-15 goal scorer in the league like a Gordon, Bailey etc to give us options?

Arteta definitely reacted emotionally to the constant questions surrounding the issue. I'm sure he'd deal with it differently now.

when you say it like that, it sure seems nailed on we will bring someone in. Why would Arteta suddenly start trusting a player he has shown next to no trust in for five years?

RocktheCasbah the problem is that it’s Wed lunchtime and deadline is Friday COB. If we were linked to anyone serious we would have heard about it now.

At least we will get confirmation during Arteta’s press conference on Friday ahead of the Brighton game. It will go something like this : ‘ we looked at a few options but wasn’t feasible for us or the player and we ran out of time. We have options internally and I trust the guys. We can also use the academy players if we need to’.

My mate Luke still loves* going on about Arteta standing by the fax machine at 5 minutes to midnight making sure the paperwork went through (he's an Everton fan).

I wonder where we'd be now had that paperwork got jammed up somehow.

I was at a Pulp gig the night of that deadline day, I remember getting to Brixton train station and getting a text from Asa (remember him?), giving props to Arsenal for all the signings they'd made!

*I'm not sure he does love it, but he can't stop himself.
