Pep Guardiola has spoken out against killings across the world, including in Sudan, where a paramilitary group backed by the United Arab Emirates, which in effect owns Manchester City, is embroiled in a civil war that has cost more than 150,000 lives.

Guardiola named Sudan when talking about conflicts where innocent people were dying. War crimes are said to have been carried out by both sides in the conflict. The vice‑president of the UAE, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, owns City, where Guardiola is the manager.

I'll give some credit to Guardiola for speaking out about Palestine, Ukraine, Sudan and the US in one breath. He also looks like he's got his foot at least halfway out the door at City.

Gurgen Well, he's drawing attention to the "damned spot" all those trophies were supposed to clean off his employers.

Possibly a bit much for Guardiola to mention something like "the same guy who okayed City's decade-long Etihad sponsorship deal also sat in on the meetings at which hundreds of millions were allocated to RSF revenue streams"

The guy has lived off unlimited dirty Gulf money for a decade and now suddenly cares about the world. He doesn't even care about his own sport. Can't take him seriously for one bit.

Not sure why anyone should give a s**t about football managers speaking about stuff way outside their domain. I had the same feeling with AW as well, genuine or not.

Bernard Woolley Problem is that sportswashing drags politics, war and atrocity into the world of sport. The idea is to stand next to the trophy wins of high-profile figures like Guardiola for the reputational upside. Better for sport over time if those figures make it uncomfortable for the sportswashers to stand next to them.
