Funny how Rice plays as a 6 for us and is fine, Foden plays on the left for City and is fine.......I'm starting to see a trend here!

A lot of players just had a bad day at the office, sounds like the Denmark system stifled the whole midfield and Southgate didn't have a response for it.

I get what he is saying though he took Phillips to the WC and didn't start him! Southgate is trying fit the best players in and not having a system which works is the main problem.

Give Wharton a go in midfield with Rice and play Gordon - he’s the only guy we have who can drive at players out on the left, unless you play Saka there and try Palmer on the right.

Bellingham was gack too. Didn't he usually play as a false 9 or on top of a diamond last season? He contributes a lot to England's midfield not working too imo. If Arsenal played like that we wouldn't be letting Odegaard off the hook for it anyway.

Trent needs to be benched or played at full back, and one of Foden, Kane and Bellingham needs to be dropped.

Still doesn't solve the problem at 6 though. Could Wharton and Rice work?

100%. It's surprising that the likes of Rice, Foden, Bellingham etc play with Jorginho, Rodri and Kroos but don't understand the value of getting on the ball, pinging it around for 10 minutes and frustrating the opposition and then incrementally build attacks. Gazza M I'm curious to see if these high touted england players can actually play for eachother. I don't even mean in terms of effort or togetherness, because I think they have that. I mean are they intelligent enough to create a platform that allows everyone to shine. guys like saka, rice, bellingham and foden are surrounded by superb technicians at their respective clubs that enable them to play so freely. will they be able to adjust their games so they can function without the technical world-building of bernardo silva, rodri, Kroos, odegaard, jorginho et al.

guess not. had some hopes that with all the year 3000 coaching the current crop of england players get at club level, there would be a progression in their technical level and intelligence. still lagging the competition as much as ever. much of this falls at midgates door as well ofcourse
